[Thanks to the Meta being on the loose, York is no longer staying in his room--no matter what security measures he uses, it's just not safe, and he'd rather not be murdered in his sleep, thanks. Aside from putting a major damper on his social life (except for the Host Club, he always has to make it there), it means he's mostly been acorn-free in

You are a friend of the Doctor, then?
[A mildly amused sound] I should like to see the people here become accustomed to a forest dwelling, I think. Some would adapt much more quickly than others. [You people and your reliance on electricity and running water...]

[And he just chuckles a little at the idea.] Hey, don't look at me. I'm a city-boy all my life, but I can burn meat over a campfire if I have to.

And what would you make of a city within a forest? For such is my home.

[A city in a forest? Hmm, he's pretty sure they've had those on at least some of the colony worlds.] That depends. I don't mind sleeping outside, but would we still have supermarkets to buy our food from?

[Granted, it was before he'd come here, but it still happened. And it turned into LA after that.]

Oh? How close of an approximation was it, if I may ask? I have not yet been here long enough to experience a world change for myself, but they interest me greatly. I can scarcely begin to imagine the power required for such a thing.

It was--well, it was from about five hundred years before I was born, so it's hard to say for sure. But from what I gather, all the major points were there, but the people were like the townspeople here. Not real New Yorkers.

You bear the name of your city. [Then a pause. The townspeople are rather creepy to a telepath, you know. Just off, somehow.] I am not sure I should like to see my subjects reduced to such a state, even if it were only an illusion.

Yep. The Project I was in codenamed us after the places we were from, so Tex is from Texas, and so on.
[They're creepy to him, and he's not even a telepath!] My guess would be either an illusion, or they just use the townspeople somehow. Like one time, long time ago, the world changed to a place called Paradisa Town. Only then when these people went out on an exploration trip out past the border, and they found Paradisa Town just like they'd left it.

I see. [People who use false names have their reasons, so she won't pry.]
That is strange indeed. Was the town still inhabited or no?
Reply
Nope. Well, except for some giant cockroaches, I think.
So last time this place changed into a different one? We left some tell-marks in case anyone from the castle ever went there again.

Clever. Have you explored much beyond the border yourself? [Because she's getting the sense that you are something akin to a ranger...minus the whole "city-boy" thing.]

Self-reliant? Check. Behind-the-scenes good guy stuff? Check. Being able to tell kingsfoil from lettuce? Not so much.]
Just the once, last month. My, ah, best friend can't really go outside the power barrier without some kind of support, so it took us a long time to find something that would give him energy out there. I'm definitely going back, though. There's a lot to find.

I imagine so. It seems to me that such ventures will be vital in any attempt to understand this place. In my youth I should have been most eager to join you. [Now she'll just see you off, give you cryptic advice and lembas, and do her psychic thing.]
