[ she had been eager to get away to catch her breath and re-organize her thoughts. she hadn't expected lex to have amnesia, however temporary. of course there was the very HIGH possibility that he was lying through his teeth, but it didn't matter. either way she would need to work it to her advantage.

after some breathing exercises in the kitchen while brewing up some tea for her 'husband', she strolls back into the clinic to find him...digging around ]

Lex? What are you doing? Are you sure you should be out of bed already?

Lana. [clearly not a figment of his imagination] I thought you'd be in bed by now. [closes the cupboard and he turns to face her.]

Don't be ridiculous. I brought you some tea.

[ warily steps over to set the mug down next to his bed. don't worry it's not poison THIS time. see how sincere she looks? ]

You shouldn't be out of bed. Even without any surface injuries, amnesia is a serious issue. You should be resting.

[lets out a soft, amused chuckle. oh, lana. even with amnesia, he clearly remembers the divorce. this act of hers is going nowhere]

Since you asked me about what I could recall before arriving here... [can he have tea with a side of truth?]

What's the last thing you remember about being back in Smallville?

[hm. someone who's apparently noticed he's been at the clinic for some time now... well, it's enough to get him interested to pursue a conversation]

I've had worse. I'll be fine. [glances around] Plus, the one person that would get on my case doesn't seem to be here. So... I'll just fix it and be on my way.

[ having told lois she was going to check the clinic herself, karen is now entering the room with a tiny look of disdain on her face before she puts on a more calm expression. this lex luthor is from clark and lois' world; he wouldn't recognize her mantle nor in her civvies as karen starr was a face scientists and businesspeople would know. she's glad to have that advantage.

Trust me, I know. I've been hearing that all day.

But I'm fine. [it doesn't surprise him in the least that he had been able to get out of bed so soon after waking up from a coma. he's always been able to recover quickly. little does he know that Lana had someone heal him by magic]

Did a clinic volunteer check on you?

[looks slightly puzzled] ... For a moment there, I thought you were someone else. [it's that voice. strange.]

The doctor assures me I'm fine. I can leave the clinic tomorrow.

[Clark's been checking in periodically, without actually going there -- it's not hard when he can see through walls. When he sees Lex awake and talking to Lana he does his best to resist listening in, trying to trust Lana on this, but the impulse to just barge in and interrupt them is a harder one to fight.

He doesn't, though. He has to trust her.

Later, though, when the room has cleared out momentarily, he heads down. It's been almost four years for Clark. He's changed in that time, and part of him hopes he's changed enough to leave Lex guessing.

Clark opens the clinic door and steps in, quietly, looking to Lex.]

I was wondering when you'd wake up.

[Lex has his back to the door, but when he hears that familiar voice, he looks up, amused]

I was wondering when you'd show up. Lana told me you were here. [he closes the book he'd been reading but then lifts it up to Clark when he stands up and turns around] The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel. I found it on the rack outside and thought I could use a little light reading.

Funny how fiction doesn't seem too far from the truth now, does it, Clark?

Not too far, no, but it's still fiction for a reason.

[studies Clark for a moment, noting the fact that he looks different. but it's a surface thing. it doesn't interest him. it's easy to see what a person seems to be, but who they really are... well, that's the tricky part]

Yes, it makes for very good entertainment. Especially when the good doctor and my [here's a bit of a pause] wife won't let me leave.

[Not far from the clinic, if a person were to stop and listen, the sound of strange whirring and clicking can be heard echoing down the hall.

The sound constantly repeats itself, stopping only for a short time before starting up again.]

[wakes up from his sleep, disturbed by the sound. listens...]

[It continues, and is likely louder now that he's awake.]

[argh. the constant whirring sound is giving him a headache!

gets out of bed and heads down the hall in search of the source of that noise]
