That's an idea... Although I wonder if the castle would just get rid of the spare journals once their owners leave.

Maybe will has to do with it. If you really want something to be left behind, maybe it happens.

Hmm... Then, I suppose it'd come down to whether it's the person leaving or the person left behind who matters more in this case. Or perhaps it's a combination of both.

Maybe they both help? Or if someone really wants to leave something behind, then the recipient doesn't even need to work for it.

That's a possibility... But I suppose the only way to figure it out would be to test it. And that would be... difficult, to say the least.
