Well, the color pink does symbolize love where I come from. Love is flaunted every which way on Valentine's Day, as are the decorations.

[Ah...] Many institutions do go a bit overboard, however.

It's a holiday that was loosely based off a love story, actually. Well, a story of laws broken leading up to something of a love story, but not many people seem to focus on the origins.

The holiday itself emphasizes love in a relationship, but it is not restricted to lovers. A lot of people just give gifts to their friends-- candies just seem to be the most popular gift! Really, this is a time for everyone

This is true! Though apparently, there was a girl that Saint Valentine had grown to admire during the imprisonment given to him. Before he died, she gave the girl a note saying "from your Valentine", which leads to the phrase we use today.

[she's thinking for a moment, recalling old conversations--Flynn's design of the Grid was heavily influenced by ancient Rome, and he was pretty well-versed in its philosophy and history. So ...] I think I remember something about it coming from a festival in which Users would whip each other, also. Which doesn't sound very loving.
