Twenty Four Frogs

A new year... no doubt we've got any number of tragedies waiting to catch us unawares. My sincerest apologies to you poor unfortunates who've recently found yourselves here. Do try to keep your chins up, though. There's plenty of reason to despair, I suppose...but seeing as we've no way of escaping it, we must try to make the best of things, mmm?

[The kitchen is the one place where Liadrin actually wants to be today, despite the odd smells wafting from it; her muscles are tired from the night before and since she can't feed off of the magic she needs, food might at least do the trick.

Liadrin picks through a number of things in the pantry, moving from cabinet to cabinet in an attempt to figure out just what exactly she can cook-- when her eyes fall upon an unfamiliar sort of creature.

As a matter of fact, he's probably the skinniest orc she's ever seen in her life. So you'll have to forgive her for staring at his back rather curiously with large, unblinking, glowing green eyes.]

[he's rather used to being stared at, honestly. And he's probably come up with any number of (wrong) reasons why.

But his tone is mellow when he glances in her direction... just a melancholy rumble] You'll probably be wanting the stove then, and here's me in the way with what's almost certainly a failed attempt, messing everything about. My sincerest apologies, my dear...

[--No tusks? Come to think of it, he doesn't look like an orc that much at all.

His attention snaps her out of her own thoughts, however, and her long ears twitch in alarm at being caught. She adopts a polite smile about as quickly as possible, shaking her head with one arm lifted in a dismissive wave.]

Forgive me, no. I'm afraid this sort of thing isn't exactly my area of expertise. In fact I can't even figure out what half of the things stored in here are.

[She pauses briefly before bowing her head just slightly in greeting.] Lady Liadrin, Blood Knight Matriarch at your service.

Ah, yes... it can be a frightful puzzle, trying to sort it all out. These humans do eat the strangest of things.

[a small smile as he returns the nod] Puddleglum, at yours, m'lady. And nevermind if you forget it. I can always tell you again.

[Something about that phrase widens her smile.]

Unlikely that I will, but it is always good to be prepared. If it's all right to ask, what is it that you're making? [It smells like-- no, wait, it just plain smells.]

A sensible approach, to be sure.

[a sad glance down at the pot where he's heating up...something] It was meant to be eel stew...though I'm afraid I've most likely gone and ruined the pot. Overseasoned, no doubt.

[it could smell pretty good, actually, if one was a fan of seafood]

[Compared to the elven cuisine that she's used to, it's just not appealing. Still, she's well aware of the fact that if she tried, she'd probably be unable to do anything better.]

I wish I could help, but I'm certain I'd only make it worse.

--why don't you just wish for something that you'd like to eat? I've heard of a few others here doing something similar.

[that gets a smile. Or, at least, as close to a smile as he usually gets] So kind of you to offer, all the same. Good to see a generous heart in such a place as this.

[his smile fades into a grimace at the idea of wishing, though] Oh, I've wished often enough...but that's a dangerous path. No doubt the castle's just waiting to twist about any gifts it grants.

I'm only being honest, I assure you. [Hers fades in turn at the thought; it's something she'd never considered before, but probably should have.]

Yes, but who's to say the items kept here aren't already manipulated in some fashion? Still, I suppose it is safer to work with the raw materials than to let the...peculiar magic that runs this place try and craft something for us.

[She glances down at the strange packages of foreign food in her hands, ears wilting slightly. This doesn't look promising.] Would you mind if I tasted what you're making? Maybe we can experiment enough to put things right.

Oh, quite right. There's nothing to be trusted in this place. It's shameful really.

But of course you are more than welcome to share repast with me. I'm afraid it might not sit well... there's no guarantee that your constitution would be at all compatible with that of a Marsh-Wiggle. I'm afraid you might get a frightful upset to the stomach. But if you so choose, I've no objection outside of concern.

[.......it probably won't make her sick, not that he's very reassuring on the matter]

A...Marsh-Wiggle? [She peers cautiously into the pot. It certainly -seems- normal, but she's not about to risk it before she knows what these Marsh-Wiggle's eat.]

What do you normally include in your meals?

Oh, a bit of this and a bit of that.

[ladling out a bowl for himself, followed by a bowl with her, he goes through a quick list of the ingredients he'd included. Herbs and seasonings and water and bouillion. Really, the eel was the most exotic part of the whole thing]

[Not that she's used to most of these things, but none of them sound particularly off. Liadrin accepts the bowl gingerly with her fingertips, lifts it to her lips and takes a brave sip.]

....

Puddleglum, this isn't bad at all.

[taking a spoon, he moves to sit at the table with his bowl, taking a few contented bites before glancing up at her surprise.]

That's very generous of you to say, but you needn't try to preserve my feelings. I don't mind.

[Liadrin shakes her head, retrieving a spoon so that she can continue to eat.]

I am being honest-- I can truthfully say it is an impressive dish. But you know, I suppose I should've expected as much; it's a common rule not to judge by appearances. I guess this world has made me overly suspicions of most everything.

Thank you for sharing this with me; you're a generous person to do so.

Oh, it's nothing. Nothing at all. There's plenty to go around. I simply hope it doesn't end up turning on you, at a later hour.
