[ The journal picks up the sound of pages flipping, chips being eaten, tea being sipped, and things being written down, though nothing appears in the journal itself.

It's sitting open on a table in the library- to be precise, it's several tables pushed together; atop it lie a myriad of snacks, drinks, photographs, open books, scrolls, and pages of notes strewn about. All of this for two little girls.

One, a blond, is Lambdadelta, the Witch of Certainty. She's currently got a glue stick open, casually pasting pictures into a book of some sort, with a stick of pocky dangling from her mouth.

The other, with blue hair, is Bernkastel, the Witch of Miracles. She's got most of the books and notes around her, and seems to have at least a casual interest in something... what is she researching?

After a few minutes, spent in silence except for the aforementioned sounds, something is finally written into the journal. ]

On the dates of October 4th and 5th, 1986, almost the entire Ushiromiya family was killed on the remote island of Rokkenjima during their annual family conference.

There were no survivors on the island. In total, there were eighteen killed. Twelve members of the Ushiromiya family, five butlers, and the family's doctor all met their end between those two days.

The police found no clues as to how the murders took place. However, several weeks later, a letter in a bottle washed ashore. The letter described the murders in detail, and painting the culprit as the island's 19th person... the Golden Witch, Beatrice. The letter was signed Maria Ushiromiya, the youngest child present at the family gathering. However, the handwriting in the letter did not match any of the samples collected of Maria's handwriting.

The letter described the serial murder as a resurrection ceremony. It caught the attention of the media... along with the revelation of the island's epitaph.

[ A small clip is attached to the page at this point: it looks like a clip from a newspaper. All that's written upon it is a puzzling riddle. ]

My beloved hometown, the bountiful river running through it.
You who seek the Golden Land, follow it's path downstream and seek the key.
If you follow the river downstream, you will find a village.
In the village, look for the shore the two will tell you of.
There sleeps the key to the Golden Land.

He who lays his hand upon the key shall travel under the rules below.
At the first twilight, you shall lift up as sacrifice the six chosen by the key.
At the second twilight, the surviving shall tear apart the two who are close.
At the third twilight, the surviving shall praise my honorable name on high.
At the fourth twilight, gouge the head and kill.
At the fifth twilight, gouge the chest and kill.
At the sixth twilight, gouge the belly and kill.
At the seventh twilight, gouge the knee and kill.
At the eighth twilight, gouge the leg and kill.
At the ninth twilight, the Witch shall live again and none shall be left to live.
At the tenth twilight, the journey shall end and you should reach the Land of Gold.
The Witch will praise the wise, and should bestow four treasures.

One shall be, all the gold from the Golden Land.
One shall be, the resurrection of the souls of all the dead.
One shall be, even the resurrection of the lost love.
One shall be, to put the Witch to sleep for all time.

Sleep peacefully, my most beloved witch, Beatrice.

The epitaph is to supposedly choose the rightful successor to the Ushiromiya family. On top of this, which is odd enough by itself, it talks about the witch, Beatrice... and, more importantly, describes the ceremony in which the letter suggested the family members were murdered.

However, with every other family member murdered, the heir became Ange Ushiromiya, a little girl who had been too sick to attend the family gathering. She led a horrible life after that point, alone in the world... her immediate family killed, her distant family shunned her or used her... and a decade later, she was then killed herself.

[ At this point, Lambda throws down her project and lets out a sound of frustration. ]

Oooo, this is too much work, Bern! Even with the desk..! Some of the files themselves are corrupted. How am I supposed to work with this?! Ah-

....Hey, what are you writing?

[ She literally gets on top of the table, lying down and peering to what Bernkastel is writing in the journal... ]

Oh. This? Ahahahhahahah! Haaaaaah, don't tell me you think anybody here has the smarts to make heads or tails on this. They can't even unravel the castle's mysteries and you want to thrust this one on them? Hoooh, don't tell me you think that there's someone out there who's capable enough to take on this riddle.

Of course I figured it out! But they don't have the power of 'certainty' or 'miracles' on their side, do they? Tell me, Be~rn, are you even going to give them any hints, hmmmm?

[ There's a few taps... a few dots appear on the page in time with them. She's tapping her pen on the page, considering. And then, she dictates: ]

"Without love, it cannot be seen."

Oh? Is that it? Not much of a hint.

If anybody is interested, they can always ask for further details... or look in the library. There are any number of books written on the theories of what happened those days, not to mention newspapers and magazines.

Or even more letters, riiiight?

Say, weren't they all written by-

[ And Bernkastel cuts off Lambdadelta. ]

We're not talking about her.

Aheheheh *giggle*giggle*...!! Right, right! My lips are sealed~!

lambdadelta, bernkastel
