I don't know. Maybe we'd just get, like, inured to the horror of it all. If we weren't reacting as strongly anymore, would it be worth it to keep up the charade?

I wonder if it looks for the ones it can still squeeze a suitable reaction out of. Looking to see who is still twitching when it brings out the big guns.
