♣ ???] the tainted food job (31st)

Jun 14, 2010 14:25

[he's short staffed, but he's also very aware of what's been going on with the food supply in the kitchen, so he'll just make this short announcement, while he's at the Lux]I might be short staffed here at the Lux, but we're on the first floor, too -- and if anyone wants a meal and doesn't want to worry about whatever is going on in the kitchen ( Read more... )

[considers this for a minute, and yes -- while she can't disguise her voice the way she usually does that's ... part of the challenge]

Sounds like fun.

It might turn out to be the castle, but we can at least try to figure out that much.

If it was the castle, why would it only bother to spike the food in the kitchen? It has access to everything -- the Lux, the food in town, the food that you ask for -- I don't see it being quite so small scale.

Creativity? Trying something new?

First thing you get told when you show up is that the kitchen is on the first floor.

Could be trying to break us of the habit?

It's entirely possible. I don't know ... inducing nightmares seems very -- hands off.

Not that I've been here long enough to really tell but it seems to be the type of place that would want you to actually live your worst nightmare as oppose to just dreaming about it. And why ... taint the food. if it wanted us to stay away could just make it [a finger snap as she talks] disappear.

[and there may be some page flipping as she goes back to look at the posts made about the food in the kitchen]

We're trying to sort out the motivations of a castle, Soph.

I don't think we can guess what it wants to do. It gave us kids and has taken us to all sorts of places. On a whim.

Yeah, I agree with Sophie. Besides, if it was the castle, why bother tainting the food rather than just giving nightmares directly? It can screw with our memories - it wouldn't need a toxin to make us have nightmares.

Which means someone's responsible.

Yeah, that's a valid point.

It's a who.

Any ideas?

Someone who's going to get punched in the gnads, that's who. Reno says someone with a lab.

[chuckles]

Well, rooms can get fit to whatever people want, right?

No telling how many of those are here.

[laughs] Too bad we can't claim to be exterminators checking for a bug problem in all the rooms.

Yeah, which I helpfully told the entire castle a few weeks ago.

Bugs, huh? Maybe we could set up some monitoring equipment in the toxicology section of the library? Or in the fridge down in the kitchen, see if we get anybody messing with the food there.

...Or cross-reference people who've talked about experimenting with people who haven't had nightmares.

Has anyone actually figured out what it was tainted with?

Delta found some trace amounts in my system of something unfamiliar, but whatever it was didn't trigger either my medical nannites or my suit's healing unit. And since some poeple have been eating in the kitchen just fine, it can't be everything that's tainted.

Maybe not everything, true, but everyone has different tolerances -- hard to say who it would and wouldn't effect. Different worlds and all that.

Maybe if we figure out what it was, we could eliminate certain people from certain worlds -- if someone manufactured this compound, they have to have certain capabilities.

... Or we could try conning them out of hiding. But that's riskier, considering we don't know how closely he or she watches the journals.

And I know most of the people who answered the survey to say they had nightmares said they were human. So I wouldn't rule out anyone with an anti-human grudge.

If I had to guess, I'd say they watch the journals pretty closely. They'd have to, if they want to see how effective their little trick is.

Anti-human, or only familiar with the human metabolism.

And I was thinking more before the nightmares as oppose to during. I don't think I've said much that could be recorded in the past week or so but I have before that.
