[scrambling to his feet, his annoyance fades away completely when he sees a pretty girl come in. Well, hello there]

[a quick grin] Just a bit of a tumble. No harm done. And...yeah, that's mine. [taking the staff, he'll tip his hat to her] I'm Mat. And you would be....?

[No harm indeed, considering how quick he seems to get up.

I take it you're new around here. I haven't seen or heard you before.

Yeah, new would be right. Just stepped in a few days back. Not exactly what I was expecting, but I'm guessing you've heard that often enough.

Shrugs.] After you've been here a while, it'll be old news to you too. Guess you already figured out that the kitchen's on the first floor. [Flips a hand out to gesture at the surrounding area.]

[his smile falters a bit, fading into something closer to confusion] Well yeah, but...

[glancing around, its suddenly a lot easier to tell he's not much older than her] You don't mean this, do you? [motioning to the room they're in]

[Eyes narrow curiously.] You say that like you've never heard of a kitchen before.

[strange look] Of course I've heard of a kitchen. Who hasn't heard of a kitchen?

...but there's not even a bl- a firepit here. Or a decent wood stove.

[Bit of a laugh.] What are you, from the dark ages? [Points to the stove.] There's your "firepit" and "wood stove."

[moving a little bit closer. It still looks foreign but, closer to it, he can recognize burners for pots and things. But...]

Huh... but it's got... buttons. And where're ya supposed to put the wood? [one hand opening up the oven] In here? [there wasn't even ash at the bottom]

[Incredulously.] Yeah, you use the buttons and knobs to operate it. See? [Turns on one of the burners and then the oven to demonstrate. See the burner and the oven turn orange, Mat.] Same thing with the oven you just opened up. You don't need wood to work anything here.
