[dictated quietly]

There has been at least one resident killed directly by the actions of the castle. The Weighted Companion Cube is simply an inanimate object without its memories; when the residents' memories were taken from them recently, it was unable to communicate for two weeks. It died.

... And did it come back?

Affirmative. It returned to consciousness on the day the majority of the castle was influenced to behave as pirates.

Right. That day.

I was glad. This could provide evidence that inanimate objects may possess souls.

... What kind of cube is he, exactly?

It does not identify with either gender.

The Weighted Companion Cube is a large object with a simple mind whose thoughts are transcribed onto the journal. It appears to possess empathy, and is happy to be useful in a variety of situations.

It is very intelligent for a cube.

I'll have to speak with it sometime.

... Write to it, I mean. Is that how it works?

It understands both speech and writing, though it may have difficulty realizing that it is part of a conversation. The best way to interact with the Weighted Companion Cube is by involving it in an activity.

Good to know.

This is also the same one that was attacking people a few weeks ago, I'm guessing.

It did not do so of its own initiative. As the rest of the castle's objects and decorations were changed in a similar manner, so did it.

I knew it wasn't hi-- it's fault. Wybie already told me.

That is good. Wybie is its closest human friend. It would be unfortunate to lose that relationship.

I could tell he understood.
