washington, dc

a week and a half ago i went to washington, dc for work. i had never been before, so i was very excited to go. initially the trip was supposed to have been done by my boss, but his boss told him to take me with. then there were some budget cuts and only one person could go, so my boss picked me.

i was only supposed to visit with 4 employers, but i wanted to maximize my time so i tried to contact 8 employers. only 5 got in touch with me, and later i realized this was a blessing. 5 was exactly the number that i could have made without rushing around like a fool.

luckily i was able to squeeze in some tourist time so that i could visit the monuments. now, i am not one of those people who lingers at places like this. i like to get in, take a look around, maybe read something and then get out. this trait enables me to be quite efficient in my tourism; but quite honestly, with the throngs of high school kids visiting on a filed trip, i wouldnt have been able to tolerate loafing around the sites for very long.

so what did i see? i saw: the white house, the capitol, the lincoln memorial, the jefferson memorial, the washington monument, the WWII memorial, the US supreme court, the library of congress, arlington national cemetery, the annapolis navy academy, and load of beautiful buildings. if i go again, i think i might rent a segway® or a bicycle because the parking there is atrocious, but it is small enough to get around without a car.

there was so much to see and there was so much diversity there. in fact, i was able to get some ethiopian food while there which was so wonderful, especially since i have been craving it since i left colorado. they even had some afghani restaurants, but i couldnt find them.

spring sprung earlier there than in RI, so i was blown away at the beauty of it all. in fact, the cherry blossom festival was going on and that made every place i went smell wonderful and look gorgeous.

i was rather surprised and impressed at how clean the city was. i figured that since it was the same age as new england it would look as dilapidated as RI. nope, everything was nice and clean, the people were friendly. they did drive a little funny out there, somewhat like RIers, but it wasnt too bad. my only other complaint would be the roads and traffic. certain parts of the city had the most horrendous traffice despite an excellent mass transit system. and the roads...oh dear! those stone masons sure designed a whopper. all i can say is that i am glad i brought my gps with me, but even with that i got lost often.

i would have liked to have had a smidgen more of time, but dc is so close to me that i think i will go back. its a perfect city for a weekend trip.
