Long time no LJ

Working five part-time jobs is not fun! But, by staying incredibly busy, I don't find myself angsting over what my new contract with Sight & Sound will be. I was kind of hoping for it to come on Friday; but when I stopped to get stamps at the post office, I remembered it was Veteran's Day and there would be no mail. Of course, that was after I'd stopped at the bank to get cash and had found it closed also. Some of us are slower than others...

This is my last week of five part-time jobs, however, as the show goes up this weekend. The Wauseon High School fall production of Charlotte's Web should be an entertaining enough evening. There have been the usual frustrations, but it's been amazingly freeing to direct when there's absolutely nothing riding on the outcome except my reputation as a director: I don't have to prove anything to anyone here, I'm not fighting to keep the job, I'm not trying to build a program, etc... The person in that position is taking care of all the production aspects of the show, and I can't vouch for the quality of any of that. My only responsibility is to get the actors in shape and the play on the boards, and that is coming along well. We ran the show Thursday night (yes, our first dress rehearsal was preempted; we were being booted out of the auditorium in favor of the football awards program -- believe it!), and the kids managed to bring the first act in at 45 minutes and the second act at 35. With intermission, I think it will be just over an hour and a half, which is what this cute little piece should be. So if anyone would like to make their way to the boondocks of Wauseon to see a cute, well-acted high school production about a spider and a pig this weekend, you're all welcome. (Friday and Saturday nights at 8:00, Sunday afternoon at 3:00 -- $5.00 for adults $3.00 for students)

We're going to make the Friday night show, and then we plan to get up Saturday morning and drive to PA to take in the final show of the Kiddo's college production of Caucasion Chalk Circle. It'll be a whirlwind weekend because we'll have to turn right around Sunday and come back home (16 hours of driving round trip!), but we're looking forward to seeing the Kiddo. She's not particularly thrilled with the production so I hope it won't be painful to watch, but she's playing a villain so that should be an interesting departure from the norm. It'll be fun!

Today, I've got to get some bills paid and the sticks picked up and the lawn mowed before the snow flies-- had to turn down two sub offers today. (Yes, they're calling for snow showers the next four days here -- I am not ready for fall to be over yet!) I won't be able to sub on Wednesday either -- we present the play to the two elementary schools during the school day that day -- and I'll be preparing for the weekend on Friday, so it looks like no subbing this week. (Mike smiles; bank account frowns...) Had a great speech tournament Friday and Saturday in Upper Arlington -- several of the kids placed, and the team placed third overall! Got caught in the OSU football traffic on the way home; otherwise, it was a good trip. The Beautiful One and I were invited to serve on the worship team yesterday morning, and I ended up leading (even though I wasn't able to make the rehearsal) so that was a trip and a privilege.

The Kiddo called yesterday a bit shook up because her girlfriend from across the hall had been a victim of some sort of drugging and date rape -- on the Messiah campus and in a lounge in the Kiddo's dorm! I'm terribly sorry for the girl, but it did serve as a wakeup call to the dorm and hopefully to campus security. We tend to think nothing like this ever happens in sleepy little out-of-the-way places like Messiah; but I'll tell you what, the Kiddo no longer poo-poos me when I insist she call campus security for a ride from her car in a far-off parking lot to her dorm after dark! (She's been talking for weeks about getting her parking moved closer to her dorm because she has an off-campus job: now she says she's going in first thing today to take care of it!) And the parents pray...

On the college teaching front, we are in the home stretch for the semester. Just one more month to go and my responsibilities there will be completed. Fortunately the paychecks for both the teaching and play directing go through the end of December so January will be the tricky month (IF I get cast in the mainstage shows and go to PA in Feb. If I don't get to go to PA until the end of March, finances are going to get sticky again). My students are doing well. I expect several drops by Tuesday from those who are not working for various reasons, but the remaining group should do relatively well.

I am missing not accepting the NaNoWriMo challenge this year, but I am having fun going through my library and files and lightening my load before the move to PA. I will be better poised than ever for my writing once I get to PA. Looking forward to it for so many reasons! I hope to get the contract today or tomorrow -- by the end of the week most certainly. So get ready, LJ, for another shout of joy! Have a great day!
