Shame on me, I still haven't written my 2017 songs entry, but here's something I briefly have to comment on.
I've just watched some of the ice dance performances from Canadian Nationals. I had already seen before that those judges had given Tessa and Scott a perfect score (only one +2 and one 9.75 in the scores and everything else was +3, 10.00 and level 4 across the board), which on the one hand is probably Skate Canada's way of telling them that Tessa and Scott are perfection to them and they would have deserved all 6.0s under the old system, but I'm not so sure such scoring is doing them a favor. The French have shown a steeper improvement curve (if you can say so) over the season, so in order to catch up with them at the Olympics, wouldn't it have been smarter to indicate which areas Tessa and Scott would have to work on until February instead of saying, "You're already oh so perfect?"
You can't say they haven't worked on their programs since the GPF. Quite the contrary, and at this point I'm not a fan. Tessa and Scott have changed the music selection from the "Come What May" bit. Completely. It's more like the Knierims' now. In other words, they took the section that starts off with the "suddenly ..." part and they finish with the dramatic, musical-like final bravado "dying day" (in which Scott lifts her high up again before she drops dead in his arms).
For me, that means three things:
1. No more "never knew I could feel like this" feels.
2. That magical section during the instrumental part that brought me to tears every time (except for the GPF because of the camera angle) is gone because the music to it is gone.
3. That very wonderful, quiet, intimate ending that breaks your heart is gone and replaced by that over-the-top show ending.
So these judges liked the changes, but I know now that I will probably look for a previous performance for my keepsake.
But speaking of music changes, I am very happy that Piper and Paul ditched that what's-his-name-again theme and created a James Bond program. Yes, it's not quite as original, but you recognize what it is and instantly get what the characters' relation towards each other is. It's basically the same theme, so they didn't even have to make that many adjustments, I guess. I loved how they picked up the speed of the music in their skating. Except for some twizzle wobbles from Piper, that was a great performance and they got the silver! :0D (OK, that was because Andrew Poje fell right at the beginning of the twizzles in the SD, but anyway.)
The busy skating days have sneaked up on me again - Euros next weeks, then 4CC, and then it's already time for the Olympics. This is gonna be crazy, and it'll freak me out because I have no disk space anywhere whatsoever. Which means I'll have to work on that right now. Signing off!
