Hawaii and aloof Alaska?
After several failed attempts to unlock the door, America finally able to get the key into the knob and step into his house. Moving each foot as if the shoes were filled with lead, he slowly made his way to the living room and collapsed on the sofa. His head fell back and his eyelid fell down. He was tired. Running around the world took it out of him. Keeping an eye out for his friends was a lot more stressful when he had to keep the other eye looking somewhere else in case Russia got the urge to go all “Become one with me!” on the place.
“Daddy.”
There was also the constant bickering with his allies. England being a nag, Japan being vague, Germany being too serious, Italy was fun to hang with though…
“Daddy.”
Greece’s philosophy talks confused him. Turkey hogged all the sweets. Greece and Turkey almost fought again until America intervened…
“Daddy.”
Sometimes even he, the World’s Hero, got exhausted. It was at times like this that he really liked to just go home, kick back, and relax…
“Daddy!”
Eat a hamburger, reread the Declaration of Independence, play games with Tony…
“Da-ddy!”
Oh yeah, the two new kids were here. He’d almost forgotten his youngest daughters. So much for relaxing. Raising little states until they could look after themselves was also a difficult task. But after doing thirteen at once America had gotten used to it. He really should be making dinner right now, what should he make…
“Da-d-dy!”
Hamburgers? No, had that yesterday. Steak? Too long to cook. Macaroni? He was out. Maybe he could order some Chinese…
“Daddy! Daddy! Daddy! Daddy! Daddy!”
Was someone talking? America must have zoned out for awhile. Must be more tired than I thought.
“What is it, Hawaii?” he murmured without looking down at the little five year old girl who was no doubt jumping up and down beside the couch.
“ ‘Laska went on the roof and now she’s walkin across the big black ropes.” She said matter-of-factly.
“That’s nice, honey.”
It took a full ten seconds for the little girl’s words to reach America’s mind.
“Wait, what?” He jolted upright and looked down on the small five year old Hawaii. The girl’s big brown eyes looked back at him, happy now that she had her father’s attention. “ ‘Laska went up on the roof,” here she pointed upwards, “and now she’s walkin across the big black ropes.” Her pointing finger moved towards the window that faced the front lawn.
“ ‘Laska went on the roof and now she’s walking across the big black ropes.” America repeated dumbly. What the heck does that - Oh, God . America suddenly realized that his youngest daughter’s finger was pointing at an angle, half out and half up.
America ran back outside, tiredness forgotten. No sooner did he leap past the door did he look upwards in every direction, forgetting for a moment just where the ‘big black ropes’ were. He turned a good 130 degrees before spotting her.
Walking across the telephone pole without a trace of worry was his 49th child, his pale-haired little girl. America almost fainted.
