It is not much of a secret around work that I am a growing Dani Pedrosa fan. What is not known is that I used to be against him. I was not a big fan because everyone I've worked with are quick to put him down and set him against the 'hometown' favorites; Edward Collins and especially Nicky Hayden. It was easy to hate him when he and Nicky were both with Honda and Honda continuously seemed to favor the Spaniard.
My dislike for Pedrosa, though, totally evaporated when I met him at Laguna Seca, two years ago. He was really sweet and a full head shorter than me. OMG, like a really big BJD, I tell you! He totally kept his cool Rene brought him a GIANT poster to sign and then demanded in Spanish that Dani sign it really big. That was embarrassing. The crazy little look Pedrosa threw Rene's way...! However, he laughed when I cycled through the autograph line twice. (I went once for me and once for Carlos' son.)
I also sort of bumped into him last year at the IndyGP where he laughed at my RS Taichi coworker's antics when he realized he had the perfect opportunity to get Pedrosa's signature, but neither his helmet or a pen to get it with. Maybe I'm biased, but I've seen more smiles out of Pedrosa than frowns or scowls. So, he won me over. He's my favorite guy, though Rossi is always, and will always be, FAR more entertaining.
Anyway, all this crap you likely aren't interested in to say; I kind of think he's done for the year if not outright retiring from the sport. All this because Simoncelli was an ass. Simoncelli, who, until Sunday, I thought was really fun to watch. Especially since he took a few body shots against Lorenzo at speed.
Simoncelli is the biggest guy in motoGP and Pedrosa is the most tiny. Simoncelli is well known for body-checking people at speed (this is common in 250cc racing). Pedrosa is well known for avoiding battles because he's... tiny. It is known in racing that who ever has a inferior line on the track must make way for the racer with the superior line. That is how you avoid crashing at 100+ MPH during a race. Simoncelli had the inferior line and he did not hit the brakes. He forced Pedrosa to crash; there was nowhere for Pedrosa to go. And out of this crash, Pedrosa's collar bone was broken.
Pedrosa had recently been winning despite other injuries. He'd just gotten out of surgery. Now he goes right back in. Simoncelli's third-place podium was taken from him for the stunt; instead he was relegated to fifth. But he's still on the schedule for the next race. Pedrosa has a broken collar bone and may be out for the season if not forever. It is absolute bullshit.
I used to like Simoncelli, but I can't now. Funny how these two racers have both crossed to opposite sides of my esteem. I prefer to go from dislike to like.
