Chapter 1

Chapter 2

The force of the blow turned the tall silver mech’s head, but all he did was smirk at the blue femme that struck him.

“Fragger,” she growled at him.

“Nice to see you again, too, Chromia,” he said.

The mech’s smooth, deep voice told Eject that this must be Sideswipe, and the other, silver mech with faded gold edging Sunstreaker. He and Rewind had come out to greet the new arrivals as well, but none of the symbiotes had expected this kind of entertainment.

“Kindly keep your hands to yourself this time,” she replied. “The last time, I spent the better half of a deca-cycle convincing Ironhide not to shoot you.”

“That right? Well thanks. How is the old mech anyway?” Sideswipe asked.

The femme frowned at him and turned away, rolling back inside the base as the silver mech stood confused.

“We haven’t heard from Optimus’ crew in vorns,” Arcee informed him as she too turned to go in.

Sunstreaker snorted and smacked the other on the back of the head. “Nice going, genius. Very smooth.”

He headed into the base with the rest of the group, sparing a curious look at the four symbiotes who moved around easily amongst their larger counterparts, and didn’t seem all that worried about being accidentally knocked over and stepped on. He knew they were Blaster’s, had seen them around the mech on Cybertron, but had never had any kind of interaction with them. This was the first time he was getting a proper, closeup look at them.

It also begged the question of where Blaster himself was. The mech hadn’t really come out to meet them, despite the fact that he was the one mostly in charge of the base, and he wasn’t sure if he should feel a little insulted that Blaster didn’t consider them important enough greet personally.

Arcee stopped just inside the door, letting the symbiotes and her sister enter, but stopping the two new arrivals. “Base rules: don’t mess the place, don’t break anything, and go easy on the energon.” Her tone brooked no argument.

“Ease up, warrior femmebot, we come in peace.” Sideswipe held up his hands.

She quirked an optic ridge, but stepped aside and allowed them to enter. Moonracer rolled up at that moment and stopped beside Sideswipe, giving him a little smile, while somewhere behind her Chromia gave a soft snort and shook her head.

“C’mon, I’ll give you a little tour of the base,” the purple femme said, taking his arm and leading him away before he could object.

Sunstreaker only shrugged and looked around the common area once he was inside. His optics came to rest on the little blue mechlet and the dull gold primitive sharing a small cube of energon. A linked cable glowed between the two and he eyed it curiously… what were they doing?

He stepped closer to them. The gold one’s audio receptors flicked and the two disengaged, their respective cables withdrawing into their bodies. Sunstreaker twitched. They looked at him as he approached, waiting for him to say something. He stared back at them for a moment before realizing they expected him to speak.

“Blaster around?” he asked them.

The blue one nodded. “Take you.” He started to walk off with his primitive brother. “Come, follow.”

Rewind and Ramhorn sat together at a safe distance and watched the new mech Sideswipe spar with Moonracer and Arcee. The two femmes seemed to be enjoying the workout with a bot their size, if not bigger; and Sideswipe looked grateful for the opportunity to swing his blades around and release some pent up energy.

Curious then that Chromia chose to stand by one of the consoles and pretend that she was busy monitoring the radio for any incoming signals. The symbiotes didn’t need to be closeby to pick up on the slight discomfort she was radiating ever since the new mechs had arrived.

“So…” Moonracer ducked under the blade. “What’s space like?”

Sideswipe faltered a bit, more at the question than her action, and stumbled back a step when she got in a blow during his moment of hesitation. “Empty.” He blocked a second blow and feigned a jab at her, then spun to ward off Arcee’s sneak attack. “How did the three of you end up here with Blaster and his brood?”

Moonracer exchanged a look with Arcee.

“We were on a shuttle… fleeing… Cybertron,” the latter answered, noting how Chromia ticked a glance their way.

Rewind stirred and moved to join the blue femme, cables emerging from his body to plug into the console. “After the launch of the Allspark and Megatron’s subsequent departure, Autobot scout teams began leaving Cybertron, some to track the Allspark, like Optimus Prime and his team, others to escape slaughter by the Decepticons, and to try and find a new planet to inhabit.”

Sideswipe stared at the little dark mech, but the femmes barely flinched. They’d gotten used to his sudden bursts of information, and sometimes those random facts of his proved useful. The silver mech also noted, at last, the distance Chromia seemed to be keeping from him.

“Anyway, we ran into a Decepticon patrol,” Arcee continued, drawing his attention back. “Wrecked the shuttle. We escaped in protoform mode and eventually made it here. Blaster let us stay.”

“That was nice of him.” The words came out before he could stop himself. “But doesn’t look like there’s much here to stay around for

Rewind and Ramhorn both looked at him, and Ramhorn gave a bit of an angry grunt. Chromia slammed the lid of a tool-kit shut with a little more force than was necessary.

“It’s a frag lot better than floating around in space till your reserves give out and you starve to deactivation,” she said.

“That wasn’t what I meant. There’s nothing on this rock but all of you. What happens when you run out of energon? You’ll deactivate anyway.”

The femme rolled up to him, optics narrowed. “Y’know, Blaster already has himself and four others to feed. He could have just sent us on our way, but he took us in. The energon needed to fuel three extra bots could go a long way keeping him and the little ones alive, yet he’s allowing us to stay as long as we want. It’s not always about death, Sideswipe.”

He sheathed his blades as she continued past him and out into another part of the base, sighing as he watched her go. Then he looked at Arcee and Moonracer who stood on either side of him.

“Why did you really leave Cybertron?” he asked.

“Do the calculations, pretty mech,” Moonracer replied as she went over to play with Ramhorn. “You know who else was part of Optimus’ team, unless you’ve forgotten the mech who wanted to scatter your circuits all over the street for just looking at her funny.”

Rewind pulled back a few cables and turned to look at them. “According to recorded information, all of you as well as weapons specialist Ironhide were in the same unit on Cybertron under Optimus Prime’s command. From what I’ve been able to gather by observing your behaviour,” here he made a little noize that sounded like a chuckle. “Despite having three sisters, the two of you showed interest in the same one.”

Sideswipe shook his head and pointed at the mechlet. “How does he do that?”

“That’s why he’s the smart one,” Arcee replied.

“Where did she go?”

Moonracer jerked a thumb over her shoulder. “Probably in the hangar, working on the shuttle. I could take you there if you like.” She grinned when Ramhorn snorted. “And you could probably make amends by helping her salvage some parts from the crash zone.”

Now he was just confused. “You have a shuttle? Crash zone, what?”

Arcee shook her head. “Not too bright is he?” she asked the quadruped, who gave a short burst of a laugh.

“Surely, I thought you would have realized by now,” Rewind said as he disengaged completely from the console and faced the taller mech. “Moonbase Prima isn’t really a base at all.”
