7 day work week: OVER. Fuckin PHEW.
Been having a lot of these long work weeks lately and while it is keeping me financially solvent it also makes me feel like i don't have enough time in my life to get done all the other things i want to do. If you think about it...if they are continually scheduling me 6-7 day weeks with 2 days off....then i am getting less weekend off per month in the long run. FEH. I feel a bit cheated by that.
Went a really great show with my friend Alan (who is the bassist in the Mercury Tree, which is also Ben's band, and if you haven't heard them yet go go go
http://mercurytree.net/tree.html). The band Alan and I saw is called The Red Sparowes, and i don't know what to call them really, they are shoegazery, post-rocky and metally all rolled into one. It is all instrumental. 3 guitarists, a bassist and a drummer, although there was some awesome switching around when the lead guitarist occasionally played on the keyboard and for a couple of songs picked up the bass while the bassist played on a pedal steel guitar. It was pretty beautiful...epic and very intentional sounding...at times it kind of seemed like everyone was just standing around not doing much but then things would build and grow resolve in to beautiful dense swells of sound, reminiscent of Mogwai except, um, good live. After the show Alan made a comment that was pretty interesting...something along the lines of 'I don't understand how these guys are so popular!' He did like them though too, just was curious how something all instrumental and not really poppy or immediately catchy could get such a huge following. I was surprised at the huge turnout too, but i think it makes sense. RS have been touring for a while with the likes of Agalloch and have probably established quite the following for themselves, but in addition to that i think instrumental stuff is kind of fad popular in Portland, and that certainly isn't entirely a bad thing. I wish Mercury Tree that sort of success. I know it can be kind of hard to come by, but some of the stuff they've written isn't all that dissimilar.
I'm exhausted. Life is good though. Ben and i have had an awesome week. <3 <3 <3
