So, as many of you know, Amy and I were supposed to be moved out of Baltimore by the end of this month and setting up shop in Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill/Cary/Wake Forest/etc. Well, that hasn't happened, and we're here for another year. I'll explain why.
One of our main motivations for wanting to move to the Triangle was that I was applying to UNC and Duke for my PhD. Didn't get into either school, lamentably. No matter though; the plan became "go down and start working and then apply for entry for the Fall 2010 semester." THAT plan changed.
Long-term plans shifted again because while doing some researching around, I came to the realization that neither UNC or Duke has any emphasis on my primary area of interest (Hispanic linguistics) which may have accounted for why I didn't get accepted. The lack of such a program would likely preclude me from being accepted again. I did some looking around and found schools that offered such a specialization, and found quite a few. Unfortunately again, none of them are anywhere near North Carolina. So, armed with THAT, we were planning to move down to the area for just a year and then move to the city of whichever school I was accepted to.
Since I'm still here in Baltimore County writing this LJ, obviously that hasn't happened, lol. We kept running into brick walls trying to lock down housing, and none of the several schools that Amy sent a résumé to had contacted her.
So, all that said, God told me to start unpacking. I knew what He meant.
Am I happy about being here in Baltimore for another year? Not in the least. But it's for the best right now, so I'm content.
So this year Amy will embark upon a fourth year at her school, and I'm applying to adjunct instructor jobs around the area. In the meantime I'm applying to PhD programs around various parts...
- University of Georgia. PhD in Romance Languages: Hispanic Linguistics. My first choice mainly because of location (close to Atlanta, not far from my mom's side of the family either).
- University of Florida. PhD in Hispanic Linguistics. Very detailed program. Tied with...
- Florida State University. PhD in Spanish, Linguistics Track. Looks to be as strong as Florida's.
- Penn State University. PhD in Spanish, Linguistics Track. Another quite strong program. Only 4th on my list due to location.
- The Ohio State University, PhD in Hispanic Linguistics. 5th because of location and time to complete degree.
- Indiana University, PhD in Hispanic Linguistics. Actually tied with Ohio State because my degree may not take as long, but... it's Indiana.
I'll be spending my summer sending out applications and such...
