if nothing is forever, then what makes, then what makes, then what makes, love the exce-eption?

After two long overdue and very good conversations with two very good friends tonight, I've realized I'm incredibly excited to go back to Brown, even though, and perhaps because of, the reality that it's going to be a very, very different experience from last year. The realm of possibility at Brown is just so great, and even though I know there's the potential for a lot of things to change, I'm not really worried. As long as I don't become an MCM concentrator, I'll be doing all right. One month! Jesus.

I watched Vertigo for the second time tonight. Just... wow. While I'm still not sure how I feel about the ending, the film is probably one of the most aesthetically perfect things imaginable. Every shot is glorious. The use of color for symbolism is perfectly understated, and the shots of San Francisco practically made my mouth water. The whole film is a lush visual playground. And the music! Bernard Herrmann's score is absolutely glorious. I'm a bit biased, as I'm not exactly a fan of serialist film scores (I'd rather listen to serialist music on its own- yay Shostakovich!), but the three to four simple themes that Herrmann echoes throughout are the ideal complement to the visual effects- they underscore important elements without overpowering them. It's worth noting that despite the inordinately large amount of visual and auditory stimuli in this film, the viewer never feels overwhelmed. I hate that film scores now are essentially background music, designed to run for almost the entire length of the film. But I'm just babbling. The point is that the film is a great, great piece of art: gorgeous but substantial and incredibly unnerving. Both times I've seen it, I've felt almost dirty after watching it. But in a good way, if you know what I mean. I like things that shake me up.

Going to Providence and Maine to fuck around for a week or so on Saturday. It's going to be good break and change of pace, especially from work, though I have to admit I'm going to miss everyone at Cheddar's. Damn good people. I have so much that I want to write about them, but I want to do them justice.

This summer has been interesting. Cliche as it sounds, I've learned a lot about myself. More on this later? Sorry for being vague, it's late.

yes i'm fucking listening to outkast
