in slightly more amusing news,
debboamerik had to drive us to Baltimore yesterday, because I can't drive over residential speeding limits, in Beltway traffic, or in the dark without my glasses. my girlfriend will perhaps not hurt me too much if I mention that even when I can see well enough where we're going I'm not terribly fond of being driven places by her; she doesn't drive fast enough for me, and she's not as... attentive... in traffic as I would like. but when I can't see, and we're going to an area I know better than she does and that I know more by sight/feel, it's almost exponentially more frustrating to be in the passenger seat. because I had to give her directions (to my sister's house, to the best places to park, to the aquarium), without being able to give her street names.
I know the names of most of the main streets in downtown and west Baltimore, but I don't really remember them in order, and I don't navigate through Baltimore by street names anyway, because when I lived there I didn't drive. I do remember the order, direction, and intersections of the major streets. so if we go the wrong way I'll realize it in a block or two, and I'll know where to turn around. this is NOT satisfactory for my girlfriend. she needs to know exactly where she is at all times, and if we miss a turn, go the wrong way, or need to turn around, she gets confused or becomes convinced we're lost. this is aggravated by Baltimorean pedestrians, who feel they have much more right to the roadways than cars, and pay no attention whatsoever to trivial things like crosswalks and traffic signals. there's a reason our general relationship rule is that when we go to Baltimore, I drive, and when we go to L.A., she drives.
