The Drag Ball was SO MUCH FUN and SUCH A SUCCESS.
I was working the door toward the end, and my final count before amateur tips and all donations was over $2,000, all of which goes to the Fan Free Clinic.
For those of you who don't live in Richmond or just don't know, the Fan Free Clinic has been around since the 70s and offers completely free medical care, or services on a sliding scale if patients can afford to contribute to the clinic. There are also extensive prevention efforts through the clinic, from IV drug outreach to HIV, STD, and pregnancy prevention education and outreach (like the club work I do, and all the free condoms, lubricant, and information we distribute). It's entirely non-profit. They recently opened the only Transgender Clinic in the area, which offers basic medical care for people taking hormones or for people who live as men but still need pap smears, etc.
I had so much fun. Most people put a lot of time into their outfits, and I was very impressed by the performances, attendance, and attitude. The police officer I was working with (since I was handling money) was impressed and shocked by the level of honesty and community within the event; people were coming downstairs, after already having been at the ball, to pay their entrance fees. On their way out, people left donations and kind words about the event, the clinic, and our mission. It was a fantastic night.
