Oberlin was way too liberal, Boston University is in a cold, expensive place, Washington State University is in a faraway, rural place...

But UNC Chapel Hill has an undergraduate program in linguistics, accepts up to 75 transfer credits from other universities, is fairly close to home, and appeals to Jenn because it has a good graduate program in English, her brother went there, and her parents probably have in-state status.

The linguistics department at Georgetown seems better, but Jenn hates DC and I don't blame her. It's also expensive to live there and while it's close to my family and my relatives in Maryland, the traffic makes that a moot point.

The only irritating thing is that UNC Chapel Hill is $4,000 something for in-state and $18,000 something for out-of-state. My semester bill at VCU this fall was $90. But you get what you pay for, and I'd rather invest thousands of dollars than waste hundreds, which is what I feel like I'm doing here.
