Drive-by design stuff post

Life stuff is either boring or bitching right now.  But I'll make a life post soon!

Wanna seeeeee the logo redesigns I'm doing?  huh huh huh?  Well, check it out.

For all these cases, I felt the preexisting logo used by the company/product/show/etc was TEH SUCK or otherwise not so hot or not as good as it could be.  I'll show you guys the current logos and my redesigns for comparison.

Upper Canada Soap and Candle Makers:

These guys make all kinds of soaps and flowery body things which are on sale (and which I noticed) in the gift shops on the ferries.  So I thought the product design was okay.  But the logo was kinda eh:

It's ornate and sort of 'fancy' but it's not really... personalized.  I also thought that the name 'Upper Canada' was incredibly unsexy, which is weeee leeetle problemo when you want to present your fancy-soap-gift-thing company as a luxurious fancy pretty kind of entity.  But I thought I'd get around that by pushing the national identity Canadiana thing.  Rich red is also a very 'luxury' color.  I thought too that 'upper canada' was a real sort of 'Canada History Moment' name.  So why not an 'old looking' kind of 'craftsman's stamp' look?  I used a woodtype ornament to make it look fancier and added a maple leaf to it.   My redesign:

Saltspring Coffee Company:  These guys supply the coffee (and god knows I need my coffee) at the ferry terminals and on the ships.  I noticed that both of these companies had logos of teh suck while I was heading over to the islands at Christmas time btw.  Preexisting logo is kinda bad:

My redesign, mostly to highlight the word 'organic' because this company really touts itself as big big big on the organic stuff:

you can click on that to see it bigger and see the coffee bean trees.

Pink Lime Salon and Spa

Local Vancouver company, a spa and salon center with what I thought was a great name, with a great image juxtoposition of colors and pretty/refreshing.  But the logo.. it sucks!  Oh noes!

And my redesign, with the 'lime' spots as decorative elements that could also be used as icons on their in-house products, mailers, business cards, towels, etc:

maybe click on that one too since the dots are pretty small.

Latidos Productions

These guys are a local dance company that teaches salsa and reggae-type dance classes.  I believe they also do hiphop dancing.  They actually have a studio in my building.  But their logo needed some work:

And my redesign (with variations):

Coast to Coast AM:

An overnight radio talk show that discusses paranormal topics.  I listen to it all the time when I work.  Their logo, in the grand tradition of anything technical, science-y, geeky or etc having really really BAD design...  is BAD. Amazing!  Here's what they use now:

For my redesign I wanted something that would look like the night sky since part of the personality of the show is that it's always on at night.  I also wanted it to look like a digital radio display and to use visual cues of radio (another big trait of the show) like frequency bars.  The icon can either be seen as a moon and star in the night sky, or a ufo with a grey alien in it.  Or a stylized representation of the short form of the title: C2C.  My redesign:

All of the redesigns can be clicked on to see bigger versions, just in case they're too teeny to see properly.  These are all quickie redesigns for my spruced-up portfolio.

Life post soon when I'm less high on caffeine!  And like, therefore coherent.

design, workwork
