(also, note to self: substitute march 7-14.)

a couple of weeks away was what i needed to clear my head. it was good to see the people i know here and talk to them about what it's like for them: school, language, visas, rent. i have to admit i've been thinking recently about the possibility of leaving new york, and it's good to see that there are options.

yesterday tom and i had lunch at a place with pizza in kreuzberg, which has a large immigrant population...from what i can tell, mostly turkish. we paid the bill in our broken german, and the man at the counter asked us where we were from. we told him "the USA", and he said "ohhhh!" and pointed at another man behind the counter. then he said to us in german, "he's from iraq. fallujah!"

and i said "ohhhh...! uh..." and the iraqi man immediately threw up his broom at us in a mock-threatening gesture, a grin on his face the whole time.
next time someone asks that, i'm going to say "new york".

...the best part though was that after we'd left, tom turned to me and said "did he say that the other guy was a javelin-thrower?"
