article is the first time i've heard of any explanation of meat production's affect on the environment in the mainstream media.
it is very rarely mentioned in discussion about the environment that doesn't come from strictly vegetarian or animal-rights sources. i thought that those suggestions over the end credits of "an inconvenient truth" could at the very least suggest eating less meat, less often. but nothing.
the end of this article suggests there could be an educational campaign about the environmental affects of meat production, and how americans eat more meat than is necessary or even good for them. the glaringly obvious response is that will never happen. not from the government at least. because meat is a huge industry in this country, and encouraging people to eat less or no meat would cause that industry to lose money. which would have huge political repercussions. don't we remember when oprah got sued by the cattle ranchers of texas?
...however. for those of you who want to ask me why i don't eat meat, here's reason #1.
