Summary: Tanabata alone was a terrible ordeal, so she decided to surprise him.
Note: FINALLY GOING HOME TOMORROW. :DDDD HAPPY EARLY TANABATA EVERYONE.
She excused herself from her group of friends and trotted to the quiet sitting area, set aside from the bustling line of Tanabata festival stalls. Some of her guy friends had already made their way through packets of yakisoba and mounds of takoyaki from the food stalls. The girls were more fascinated by the games and handicrafts. She really wanted to enjoy the festival with them, but seeing as to how most of her friends showed up with their better halves, it stung a little.
The sitting area was relatively empty. She turned away from the kissing couple on the park bench and pulled out her phone.
His phone went off, an obscure rock song that only he and probably Keito knew. He stretched himself to reach it while keeping a steady hand on his bass--one of the many that decorated his studio apartment.
"Hey babe."
"Hey, hi, what are you up to?"
"Work," he rubbed his eyes. "Songs for the new single. Arrangements. Aren't you at the festival?"
"Yeah, I am, but it's… really not the same without you here."
"I'm sorry. You know I can't just show up. Too many people--"
"I know, I know," she said quickly. "I just really wish you were here. It's Tanabata."
"It'll be more fun spending time at the festival with your friends than stuck here with me."
"But--"
"Where are they, anyway?"
"Off with their boyfriends or girlfriends. I really wouldn't have minded just watching you work."
"It's boring. And I turn into a horrible monster when I'm stressed."
Her laughter put a smile on his face, erasing the stress lines for a moment.
"I know. Can I at least call you later during the fireworks? You can listen to it."
"I can actually see them from my big window."
Silence
"You what?"
"I'll watch them from my window."
"You didn't tell me that!"
"I didn't think I needed to."
"We could have watched it together even if you couldn't attend the festival with me! Gosh, Hikaru, why didn't you tell me?!"
"Like I said, I'd rather you go enjoy yourself at the festival instead of wasting your evening here. You've always liked them."
"Yeah but…" He could feel her glare through the phone. "Gosh, you're terrible."
He chuckled.
"Call me later when it starts. It'll feel like we are watching it together, right?"
"…okay."
"Go find your friends. Eat. Play. Win plushies. Oh and I want a picture of you in your yukata."
"I'll send you one now, wait--"
After a moment's pause, his phone vibrated in his hand and he opened the new mail. He blinked at the picture of her in front of the festival in her pink yukata for a few seconds before putting his phone back to his ear.
"Damnnit."
"Wish you were here now?" She teased.
"I hate this job."
"You know you don't, which is why you're there and not here."
"You're gonna get it from me."
He could imagine her biting her lip in the shy way she always did whenever he said things like that.
"Go have fun, babe, I'll wait for your call."
"Mmhmm. Bye."
"When are the fireworks?"
"Er," her best friend looked at her boyfriend for answers. He answered for her.
"8pm. We have about half an hour more."
"…Sorry, I have to go."
"What?! You're not staying? But this is the best part!"
"I know!" She yelled back as she shuffled through the crowd. "Which is why I'm doing this!"
Someone knocked on his door. He shifted his headphones over his ears and ignored him/her/them.
Knocks came again. He turned up the volume.
His phone vibrated on the table and he finally grabbed it, ready to snap (probably at Yabu chasing him for songs), but seeing her name on caller ID made him swallow his frustration.
"Hey---"
"Open the door! What's taking you so long?"
"W-What?! I thought you were at the festival--"
"Hurry up!!"
He set his bass down quickly on its stand and jogged to the door. He opened it and there she was in her pink yukata, panting and sweating.
"What happened? Are you alright?"
"Why didn't you answer the door?" She pushed past him and trotted towards big loft window. "And I had to run up your entryway in geta. That was hard."
"Why are you even here?"
She glanced at her phone quickly.
"3 minutes till the fireworks."
"What? Wait--you came here to watch the fireworks?"
She nodded, as if that was the most sensible thing ever.
"You stupid girl," he ran a hand through his hair and sighed. "I can't believe you."
"Turn off the lights! We'll see better that way. Quickly!"
"Babe, this really isn't the time--"
"15 minutes, Hikaru, please?" She begged. "It'll be a good break for you, too. Look, I'll leave right after this and leave you alone to work, alright?"
"That's… not the point. You should be watching this with your friends--"
"No, it's Tanabata for god's sake," she threw up her hands. "I should be spending this with my boyfriend and I'd appreciate it if he felt the same way."
He opened his mouth to respond just as the sky lit up behind her. She spun around.
"It's starting!"
He gave up trying, and killed the lights in the apartment. She stood with her nose nearly pressed to the glass as the fireworks exploded in the distance. His initial shock has given way to warmth, perhaps fatigue too, as he walked up to her in the dark, wrapping his arms around her from behind. She leaned back and rested her head against his shoulder.
"This is nice, thank you," he mumbled into her ear and kissed her temple.
It has been a while since he last saw fireworks with someone else. And it did make them more spectacular, though they were pretty far. But somehow tonight, set behind the foreground of rooftops and small buildings, they completed the view outside his window.
"You look pretty, by the way."
She tilted her head and brushed her lips against his jaw.
"Thanks."
The last of the fireworks went off, and there was silence. She turned in his arms.
"Guess I should go… You need to focus on your stuff."
"Stay."
"But…"
He kissed her forehead.
"Just stay. I've done enough for one day. Besides," he smiled apologetically. "I should be spending time with you today."
"Are you sure it's alright?"
He pulled his phone out of his pocket dramatically and switched it off. She laughed and buried her face in his chest.
"I'd feel bad if Yabu-kun goes after you though…"
"You should worry about yourself…" He grunted as he suddenly picked her up bridal style. She shrieked and clung to his shoulders for support. "I did say you are gonna get it from me…"
"For what?!"
"For looking so damn…" he struggled to find a word that would have been appropriate. "…pretty."
She bit her lip again. That was all the motivation he needed. He turned towards the corner where he had curtained off his sleeping quarters before he remembered. The sight before them was horrendous. The curtain was drawn back and scores were scattered on the mattress, along with a handful of small percussion instruments.
"…Okay, sofa it is---"
"No!"
"Why not?"
She looked away from his questioning gaze shyly. "J-Just no. It's uncomfortable. Can't I just watch you write your stuff?"
"Well I was gonna take a bath…"
"Hikaru!"
"Right. Bath it is. You're coming with me."
She took a little longer than he did in the bathroom, as girls always do, and when she stepped out in one of his tees, drying her hair on a towel, he was back on the bed strumming another tune and typing things onto his laptop, dressed in a long sleeved top and sweatpants. The scores have been neatened into a pile and the other instruments have been put away.
She shook her head, with a small pout. So much for "enough work for one day". He beckoned her forward and patted the space on her usual side of the bed, when she stayed over. She draped the towel on the rack nearby before nearly jumping on to the bed, landing on her tummy and making his things jump a little on the mattress.
"Hey!"
"Sorry," she laughed and turned her head towards him, placing her cheek on the back of her hands. Her tee shirt had ridden up her torso above her waist after the jump, and he reached over to tug the hem over her behind with a cough. He then returned to his laptop.
There were few words exchanged for the rest of the evening. She shifted her position a few times, under the covers now, as she watched him go about his business, occasionally throwing a few comments here and there when he asked for her opinions.
"Hey do you think this--sounds better, or this?"
She didn't respond. He cast his eyes over and found her asleep, hair splayed on the pillow, lips slightly parted and a hand on her chest, rising and lowering steadily with her breathing. He contemplated continuing with his work but decided against it. After keeping his stuff away and switching off the lights, he drew the curtain around the bed and crawled in carefully. As if on cue, she stirred and blinked.
"O-Oh, I'm sorry I fell asleep--"
"Shh," he drew her close against himself and wrapped his leg around hers. "You must be tired."
"Are you done with work?"
"Mmhmm. No need to worry."
"I had fun today," she yawned and snuggled in closer. "Thanks."
"Are you referring to the time before you came here or after you came here? Or just bath time? Cos I know I had fun--"
She poked his sides and he chuckled, planting a soft kiss on her nose, and then on her lips.
"Goodnight."
Somewhere across Tokyo, Hikaru's manager was ready to fling his phone across the room, the screen showing his nth rejected call from Hikaru.
