Chapter 11 The rain was mocking at her, she believed, the one night she decided not to bring her umbrella it started pouring. In the middle of October!
"Hey, didn't you bring your umbrella?"
"N-No, I forgot."
"Oh," Kohei opened his and held it above her head. "I'll walk you to the station then, I'm going that way too."
"Thanks..."
They stepped out into the rain, and she shuffled in a little closer to hide from the rain, bumping shoulders with him occasionally.
"I thought Hikaru-kun usually picked you up after work."
"He's been busy..."
"Yeah, haven't seen him in weeks. Do you guys still meet up?"
"Yeah, I had dinner with him the other day."
"I see... Don't you ever get lonely though?"
"H-Huh?"
"I mean, he's all busy and everything, you don't get to meet him often."
"It's fine, I think," she smiled. "It's nice when we do meet up."
"Still, what kind of boyfriend leaves his girlfriend feeling lonely on a rainy night?"
"The idol-kind," she laughed.
"You know, if you had gotten a normal guy--like me or something, you know, without the insane work schedule--he would never leave you out like that."
"M-Maa."
"I'm just saying," he shrugged. "But if you're happy with him..."
"I am, thank you."
"Glad to hear that. Anyway, I haven't told anyone else yet, but I managed to land us this gig--"
"Yuuka!"
They turned to see Hikaru jogging down the pavement with an umbrella over his head.
"Y-You made it."
"Yeah, I was still late though," he glanced between the two with an unreadable expression. "Didn't know you were going home with him nowadays."
"I forgot my umbrella, he was just walking me to the station..."
"Yeah, thanks for that."
The lack of sincerity was piercing. Hikaru threw an arm around her shoulders the moment she stepped under his umbrella and held her close.
"See you around."
Kohei nodded curtly and walked off quickly into the rain.
"H-Hikaru, I--"
"I'll take you home."
"What do you mean 'try'?"
"I'm really sorry," she winced at the disappointment in his voice. "But that paper is really, really important for my grade this semester."
"When is due?"
"6pm on that day."
"Can't you finish it earlier and come?"
"That's why I said I'll try, Hikaru, but I can't promise anything. I've got a ton of work in the coming weeks. I'll go on another day, alright?"
"But that's the last day that I'll be doing my solo segment for the concert..."
"Oh my god, really?"
He stayed quiet and looked at her with his usual sad eyes.
"I'll try my best," she whispers, because she really didn't know if she could.
"You're so not getting a autograph or a chuu from me."
"E-Eh?"
"I was planning it, you know," he sat down opposite her at her small dining table. "Since I gave you the ticket, I'll know where you're seated, then I would have specially tossed an autograph and a chuu in that direction. But now that you're not coming, you can just sit back and be jealous of every other girl who's getting a chuu from me."
She stifled back her laughter and faked a distressed voice, "Oh dear, denied of the great Yaotome Hikaru-sama's autograph and chuus, how will I ever survive?"
"I had wanted to see your reaction..."
"You can pass me an autograph anytime, Hikaru."
"It's different seeing you catch it at a concert. Oh and you catching the chuu too--"
"That--" she blushed. "You can do that when we're alone too."
"--and jumping up and down and screaming my name? You don't do that here."
"That's just silly! And there will be another... five thousand or something girls in that stadium screaming your name already."
"But I wanna hear you," his voice dropped to a low whisper. "I want you there when I'm working hard. I want you to see that."
"Hikaru... I know you're always doing your best, you don't have to prove anything."
"But--"
"I promise I'll go on another day, alright? I don't want to make a promise I can't keep and say that I'll definitely go on that day, but I will try."
"Fine. You owe me a couple of screams and blushes and squeals though."
"Yes sir, I'll be sure to scream the loudest, blush the hardest and squeal the girliest."
She said it all with a playful grin, but the sudden mischievous glint that flashed through his eyes wiped it clean off her face.
"...What was that?"
"Actually, I think I can make you do all of that now."
"No you--don't even--"
"I have my ways."
"You--"
He smirked and kissed her full on the lips.
She made a mental note to never let him stay over again when she received a stern and more importantly, extremely embarassing warning from the landlady the next day about 'indecency on her land' followed a complaint (not directed at her) about 'lack of governmental funds for more soundproof walls'.
He laughed and promised her that he would get soundproofing boards for her room when she told him about the landlady's visit.
"That's not the point!"
"I know. Gotta get back to rehearsals now, love you."
The line cut off.
Her day didn't get any better when Kohei informed her about their major gig. The date was haunting her. 24th September. Why did everything have to fall on that dreadful day?
"G-Guys, I don't know I can make it..."
The rest of the band turned to her with horrified and disappointed looks, and she wanted to bury herself there and then beneath the piling disappointment from everyone.
"Why not?"
"I have a really important paper due that day at 6pm, so... Rehearsals might be a problem, and..."
"The gig's starts at 7, Yuuka. If you could submit your paper about an hour or so earlier we can do a last minute rehearsal and just perform like that. I mean it's major but it's not like broadcasted major."
"I don't know..."
"Hora, we can do the songs that Yuuka's familiar with so she won't need to attend that many rehearsals," the drummer--Kaisuke--piped up. "We can, right?"
She felt a wave of gratitude towards the usually quiet drummer.
"Why does she need to go? We can perform without her--"
"Because the gig is for bands with both male and female vocalists, Yoshi, the specially asked for duets."
The bassist nodded grudgingly at Kohei. Yuuka took a deep breath and bowed.
"I'm sorry everyone, I will definitely try my best to make it--for the band. But I can't confirm anything--"
"I need to tell them if we're performing or not by today, Yuuka," Kohei said quietly. "Sorry to pressure you... But this is a big chance for all of us, if you could... You know..."
"G-Give me a moment."
She went out of the practising studio, ignoring the hushed complaints about her coming from some members of the band and dialled Hikaru's number with shaky fingers. A series of rings later she was directed to his voicemail and she shut cover of her phone.
Through the ajar door she could hear Yoshi clearly.
"I told you it was a bad idea getting her--but no, you wouldn't listen because you desperately needed a chick to flirt with--"
"Watch your mouth, Yoshi."
"She's not a musician, she's a fucking nerd who's just getting money out of us--"
"Aren't we all getting money from this?! Don't pretend that you're not using this money to pay your damned rent, and Goro isn't juggling 3 jobs to pay for his mom's medical fees--"
"But we care about what we're doing, and Goro treasures this, she doesn't! And now she's gonna fuck up the entire band just because she has grades to take care of."
She watched as Yoshi got up from his seat and jabbed a finger at Kohei.
"I want us to have our break, Matsumoto, more so than you think and that chick isn't doing anything to help."
"She's the reason we landed this gig at all. The producer approached me specially asking for her to perform--"
"Then maybe she should give a fuck about the band and where this is going! Every single gig we land is important, Matsumoto, you know that--"
"Sorry guys."
The quarelling ceased and Yoshi narrowed his eyes at her, his dreadlocks falling into his face.
"I'll definitely go on that day guys, please don't worry. Let's make it the best live show anyone's seen of us."
She attempted a smile, though the only ones who returned one to her were Kohei and Kaisuke, the latter shifting his glasses a little up his nose. The bassist went back to his seat, continuing to compose a tune with the guitarists without a second look at her.
"Thanks, Yuuka, this means a lot to us--even if Yoshi doesn't say it."
He landed an encouraging pat on her shoulder, which she shrugged off.
"N-No problem."
She knew better what Yoshi thought of her.
