Yabu buried his face into his pillow, tired from the day’s photoshoot and Shounen Club appearance. He somehow managed to shower after getting home, and was finally lying comfortably on his bed.
The time ticked by.
When Yabu glanced at the clock, it read 1:32am. He had been awake for nearly 2 hours.
He turned over in bed, for the nth time that night.
Why couldn’t he sleep? He was dead tired and his eyelids were heavy, but everytime he felt that he was close to drifting off, something would wake him.
He was half expecting his phone to ring.
No, rather, he was hoping his phone would ring. Inoo often called at night, and Yabu was hoping he would call now.
He couldn’t sleep.
At all.
He glanced out of his window at the night sky, and wondered if Inoo was awake too.
“Whoa, someone stayed up late last night…” Takaki winced as he saw the huge eyebags under Yabu’s eyes.
“I co-co-ahh-couldn’t sleep…” Yabu yawned, rubbing the sleep from his eyes.
Takaki frowned.
“Why? Did you take coffee?”
“I really don’t know…”
“One thing I know, those eyebags of yours are gonna be hell-”
The door creaked open and Inoo stepped into the dressing room, his eyebags even more pronounced on his paler complexion.
“Oh what the crap, you look like a panda, Inoo!”
“Shut up, Takaki…” Inoo threw a sleepy punch at Takaki.
“Sheesh, what where you two up doing?” Takaki side-stared at them with suspicion.
All that the two boys who were slumped on the sofa could manage was a semi-murderous glare.
A week passed. Yabu noticed that both him and Inoo were looking too tired for anything.
He couldn’t sleep. And when he asked Inoo, the younger boy just said that he was busy studying.
Yabu was up nearly every night, hoping the crickets would send him to sleep. Instead they just kept him awake most of the time.
He was missing the “Oyasumi” he used to receive nearly every night from a certain someone.
He was wondering why that someone has stopped calling him at night. Usually when Inoo was up studying, somewhere in the night he would call Yabu, complaining about school, work, and being lonely.
But no way was Yabu going to admit that he missed Inoo’s calls.
At 2:42am that night, Yabu couldn’t stand the torturous chirping of the crickets anymore, and speed dialed Inoo’s number.
“Kota?” Inoo picked up after the first ring, not sounding the least bit tired.
“Hey. Can’t sleep again. You?”
“…No, me neither.”
“I wonder why.”
A silence fell over the two, and slowly the two’s breathing slowed and steadied, and somehow harmonized.
Yabu turned over in bed, holding his phone to the ear that wasn’t on the pillow.
“Did you just turn over?”
“Yeah, I did.”
“Haha, the ruffling was really loud.”
“Oh, sorry then.”
“Nah, it’s okay.”
“How was your day?”
“It was quiet.”
“Ah. Hikaru was fooling around the set of Hi! Hey! Say! again. I swear that guy was a monkey in his past life.”
“Haha…” Inoo’s laugh sounded rather dry.
“We sound like a couple making pillow talk,” Yabu laughed.
“Sou…?”
The silence continued. Yabu felt his eyelids grow heavier as he listened to Inoo’s steady breathing.
“Nee, Kota,” Inoo suddenly said, his voice breaking slightly at the end. Yabu perked up. Inoo’s voice doesn’t usually do that anymore, unless
he’s laughing really hard, or he’s about to cry.
“What? You sound-”
“Do you really mind it that much that I call you at night?” Inoo’s voice quivered.
Yabu was caught off guard.
“Wh-why would you ask that?”
Inoo was silent. Yabu listened to Inoo’s breathing go from fast to slow. And when Inoo spoke again, despite trying to steady his voice before, it still quivered.
“Your comment in Shounen C-club…” Inoo hiccoughed near the end. “I’m sorry for calling you at night. I mean-”
“Kei-chan you idiot.”
“E-eh?”
“You idiot.”
“What did I do?!”
Do you know why I couldn’t sleep for the past week?
“No, I don’t mind.”
“Eh?”
“Inoo Kei, I do not in any way mind that you call me in the middle of the night. I thought it would be funny to mention that on Shounen Club, that’s all.”
“…Really?”
“Yes, really,” Yabu smiled, imagining the flustered expression on Inoo’s face.
“Oh okay,” Inoo’s voice immediately perked up.
“Are you wearing pajamas?”
“Eh?! Why do you ask?!”
“I just wanted to know,” Yabu turned over again, smirking.
“Um, no. I’m just wearing track pants.”
“No shirt?”
“Yabu!” Inoo scolded. Yabu chuckled silently.
“Sexy~” Yabu purposely let out his breath slowly. He could hear Inoo’s breathing pick up slightly.
“Yabu, shuddup…”
Yabu heard Inoo yawn on the other end. He looked at the clock. It was already 4am.
“Sleepy?”
“Yeah, surprisingly. I thought the insomnia bug was gonna annoy me more…”
“Oyasumi. Get some sleep before tomorrow.”
“Un… Oyasumi, Kota.”
“Oyasumi…”
Yabu woke up with his phone squished beneath his body. He didn’t even have the time to put his phone back on the bedside table before sleep claimed him.
His phone buzzed.

He smiled and got out of bed.
Takaki walked into the dressing room the next day and found Yabu and Inoo without the huge eyebags, and trying to smear lipstick on each other’s faces.
He shook his head and settled his bag down in the corner of the couch, amused at their ability to be this energetic even though they had been coming to work looking like pandas for the past few days.
Some slimy was smeared on his face. Takaki wiped it and saw that his fingers were now glittery pink. Inoo was standing a small distance away, grinning with pink lipstick in hand.
“INOO KEI YOU PUNK, GET BACK HERE!”
