So, after the huge disappointment NaNo ended up being for me (read: I ended up being a huge disappointment to NaNo), I've decided to put Silent Sunday away for a while and change gears a bit - just a bit.
I'm starting a new story called "Lost House" which is gonna be about a haunted house. Woo, spooky. It's weirder than that, I promise, but I haven't worked out all of the details inside my head yet (or on my Scrivener clipboard yet, which by the way, is an amazing Mac program specifically for novel and research paper writing and you can download a cracked version on thepiratebay.org), and I also don't want to give too much away.
But I'm having a problem with the opening: I have a group of people I want in this house. I just don't know how to put them there and have it be most interesting. So what I need is your help.
Option 1) It's a group of urban explorers who stumble upon an old house and who just want to check it out, see what it's got in it, and take some pictures, when they get trapped in the house.
Option 2) It's a group who intentionally goes looking for haunted houses, and Lost House is one that they've heard is pretty tame, so they go in completely unprepared.
Option 3) It starts as something called an altered or alternate reality game (these are games that are set up on the internet and have no real specific goal, most of the time. They're mostly like elaborate games of hide and seek that involve a bunch of clues given not only online but through random cell phone/payphone calls that actually forces people out into the real world to play the whole game. An example of this was ilovebees which was actually a promotion for Halo 2, and I like it because Master Chief's original evil AI was called Melissa, which is Greek for honey bee, which is also my name, and I would give anything to get inside Master Chief's head [read: pants]). Obviously, the game goes bad, or ends up being some kind of trap, etc...
I'm sort of moving away from Option 2, because I don't want it to be like Rose Red, but even if I used that, it would be totally different because I want the story to play out in a completely different way.
I really like Option 3, a lot, but I don't want people to think that I'm trying to rip-off Stay Alive (which was a hysterical movie, but I still think I could have done it better. Like, you know, actually using facts about Elizabeth Bathory). It could also end up being too much like Th13teen Ghosts, which I also kind of want to avoid, even though I enjoyed that movie for it's over-all weirditude.
Option 1 I'm sort of neutral towards because either way, I could make that one turn out the way I wanted to, plus it involves the "regular people" scenario, which would imply that people wouldn't know what they were getting into, which could be much more interesting in the long run. And also, spooky pictures!
So what I'm asking of you is to vote. And I could use a poll, but I won't, because I'm not going by sheer numbers - I'm asking you to vote for a scenario and then tell me WHY. Those people/person who give/s the best answers will be the scenario I pick. And, if it's okay with the "winners", then I will probably turn to you for advice through the whole writing process, and, lucky you, I will probably use you as some sort of accountability, to force my lazy ass to keep writing. I look forward to your answers!
And of course, I love you all. :)
