Altered Reality Games

This is a piece I'm working on as a response a prompt for a game company I may be working on. That's really all I can say for right now, since I'm not guaranteed the job right now, but this was what came to me. It's a post-apocalyptic game, and I was allowed to come up with anything I needed to try and get the "player's" attention...

Anyway, that's enough about that, it's not really important, anyway, since it's just the intro and no one would have any idea what the hell was going on anyway. After all, that's sort of the point. ^_^

Something is very wrong with the world today.

This city used to be busy. I remember a time when it was hard to make your way down the sidewalk for all the faces you had to shove past. Now the only face I see is my own, reflecting the dirty glass of the buildings that sit empty, like sickening tombs; massive reminders of how many people don't work there any more.

I'm not the only one left. I don't pretend to be some great survivor. In fact, the current world population is probably still in the millions, but I might as well be alone. Everyone else is either an enemy or a stranger.

But you can call me "D".

It's midday, and the city is quiet. Stalled cars still litter the streets, deadened exhausts making no sounds. Most are empty, but every so often you stumble across on with some poor soul trapped inside.

...Not all of them are dead...

You can hear the wind blow. You can hear the water running in the subterranean pipes, the few that the remaining inhabitants of this world work so hard to keep running.

And sometimes, from the east, you can hear a hum as the sun rises.
