Thoughts on the new FFXIII trailer
Since somebody asked, I took a look at the Tokyo Game Show FFXIII trailer (viewable here with minor subtitle errors) and am now posting my thoughts on it!
I am... slightly disappointed, to be honest.
I haven't kept up with all the FFXIII info as it's been released, so this Serah person was news to me. Suffice it to say I don't care for her - nothing to do with her personality, everything to do with the fact that a princess by any other name is still a princess. The trailer suggests she's fairly pivotal, the delicate waif to be protected, and while it's nice that her big sister is getting in on the protectorate action, I am... well, less than thrilled about her presence as an obvious plot device. I assume she'll die really early on and Snow will be an angsty douchebag about it for the rest of the game and no one will ever stop harping on it. Alternatively, she'll die at the end and maybe only get kidnapped at the beginning. Who knows.
Anyway. The trailer.
I've watched a few FFXIII trailers. It irritates me that I know more about Snow than I do Lightning, by this point. All I know about Lightning is that she's taciturn and good at waving a sword around, which lends credence to my cynical theory that she's going to be a badass action chick without much else behind her, since character and capability are apparently mutually exclusive for girls. On the bright side, seeing that apparently everyone has an eidolon that turns into a vehicle makes the Shiva-to-motorcycle thing less heinous.
Anyway, this trailer was mostly about Serah/Snow, from what I can tell. I have a feeling that the game's going to pull a fast one on us and Snow is actually going to be the hero or something stupid like that.
I just. Why is this Serah person here? Vanille is presently occupying the bubbly quota and gets kidnapped at some point in time. Did we really need a droopy long-suffering princess to fridge to get the ball rolling? On the bright side, at least it means Snow is very unlikely to be presented as a romantic interest for Lightning.
I don't know. I plan to play the game, but I really don't anticipate great things. I'd love great things, don't get me wrong, and evil oppressive governments are always lovely, but the info they've chosen to leak, the scenes they've selected to display, the whole presentation just doesn't paint a very positive image in my mind. Here's hoping I'm proven wrong.
