I GOT IN A FIGHT ON THE INTERNET TODAY.
FLIST, PLEASE ASSURE ME THAT I AM RIGHT UNEQUIVOCALLY.
Okay, no, but seriously,
I did get in a fight on the internet today (like this is news to you all). I'm actually not sure why it rubs me the wrong way that people are hating so hard on this OP, but I thought I'd talk about it here since no one on FS cares what I think and everyone who is trying to fight with me today has been boring (where is all the good drama at?).
First of all, I remember being younger. I can remember the time when my definition of how good a female character was was how much ass she was able to kick, preferably on the front lines. Nothing else mattered, except maybe how much pink she wore, because pink is the devil's colour. I am obviously not like that anymore (bitches don't know 'bout my crush on Aeris Gainsborough), but I still think the issue of female characters are a bit of a minefield. And, while I find most of the girls listed on the original secret to be
straight-up awesome, I can also see what the "problem" is with a lot of them. Because, there is just always something about female characters - Integra must be manly to be cool, Aeris is relegated to the backrow and not allowed to be properly unfeminine, Katara must wind up with the hero, Toph must be perpetually tough to be worthwhile, and Kreia... Well. I guess there's nothing wrong with Kreia.
But, the point is, I'm hostile to this idea of misogyny because what I see is cynicism and disappointment. It sucks to watch a series and be able to see nothing but the ways in which the characters you're supposed to relate to are being shortchanged. I agree, it's a sexist secret - but I don't think there's anything to be accomplished by lambasting the OP. In my mind, it's just sad, really. And I don't think defending the OP is defending sexism, I think it's defending a person from unreasonable attack that, in fact, distracts from the damn issue at hand! Of course, I could be wrong. It's been known to happen on rare occasion.
tl;dr am I endboss of F!S yet
