Oh my god. This is absolutely fantastic. I love this image of Mary, sad and smart and really, not all that sad. It is a great mix of melancholy and happiness that makes it ring so true. I loved watching Watson and Holmes through her eyes, loved John's trembling admission.

This exchange in particular made me sigh and then read the whole conversation again from joy:

"I don't know anything for certain," Mary tells her.

"Neither do I," Irene shrugs, "but lord what I can infer."

I started reading this over at the kinkmeme, but it was so spectacular that I had to see if you've written anymore. I hope you don't mind a new friend :).

Thank you so much! I was enjoying writing this but I'm really quite sleep-deprived so I couldn't work out if it was getting too emo, I'm really glad this worked for you :D I really wanted to work Irene in there somewhere, I'm getting weirdly attached to her given how basically she's there to Get In The Way Of The Gay!

(I'm currently in the process of writing an embarrassingly long H/W that two parts are up of, but that's about it). I welcome new friends with open arms and crumpets, and I haven't had a chance to comment yet but just to let you know, I loved your Homes/Watson/Catullus fic :D

Thank you so much! I'd never even considered writing anything with Mary until I saw this prompt so I'm glad I made it work for you :)

This is wonderful. Terrific characterization, especially of Mary, who is no more than (to quote one reviewer) "a half-written page of dialogue" in the movie. I love the depth you give her, her regret for her lost love, and her step-perfect management of a Victorian marriage.

Mary thinks that well, at least Mr Holmes has faith in her deductive powers.

Beautiful writing, as well. Kudos.

I'd never even thought of writing with Mary until I saw the prompt and her existence in the movie never really impinged on my consciousness (other than: oh, Kelly Reilly, I like her as an actress) but I really enjoyed trying to characterise her here, so I'm really pleased you liked :D Thank you so much!
