People say that he needs to learn to talk (which he does do) and that teaching him to sign will only discourage his talking and he won't fit in with the other kids. Well I have news for them. He's autistic! He's not gonna fit in with other kids if he can recite an Oxford dictionary! This is from people who don't have an autistic child (or in a few cases, children at all), so they don't really understand the disability and how it affects him vs. how it may affect another child. Often, people will compare him to another "autistic" child and as they're telling me about the other kid, I realize that the child they're talking about actually has Asperger's Syndrome- which is *not* autism.
I hope so too! It's really nice to have us back to being 'us' again, like when we first got married. :)
Exactly! Some kid (most often the popular ones) sees another kid that's different in some way or doesn't have what that kid has, and they pick on him for it. I tell them that when they're the parents of an autistic child then I might take what they have to say a bit more seriously, but until then I have 4 children to raise. Sometimes it's that those people think they could do a better job than you. I've actually had people say to me; "Jenny McCarthy cured her son's autism. Just do what she did and you can fix Darren!" I think it's that response that I hate the most because it implies that I'm not doing everything in my power to make my son's life as good as possible.
That, right there, is the cornerstone of the issue with people giving unsolicited advice; looking from an outside perspective and thinking about what they would do & how it would work so much better than what the parents are doing (in a hypothetical way), is much easier than actually being on the front lines, dealing with his disability every single moment of every single day
