Plain and simple, I loved this book. So much so that I made it my Staff Pick for this past week.
I fell in love with Thyme by the first chapter and although she's definitely an unreliable narrator, I adored her nonetheless. The main reason I liked her so much is because she was the epitome of every perfect student I had -- active in everything, but with a secret life no one saw. The good student who also did drugs. Her life was believable to me because I've seen it; I know these kids; I know Thyme.
Lynn did a wonderful job portraying the numerous struggles Thyme experiences as she struggles with her dependency. I do believe the relationship she forms with Will could have been more fleshed out--their relationship was rocky to begin with and when they are suddenly making out, it seems a little forced. I found she had more chemistry with Meera...which could have been an interesting addition to the story line. I'm so glad there was no parental intervention, a scenario which is so unlikely in this day and age. I was even glad to see that Thyme's parents had their own dependencies--again, something I've seen firsthand.
The ending was perfect. Thyme's uncertainty after being "clean" for several months is realistic and knowing that she will most likely deal again is not unsettling for the reader. It's realistic, almost acceptable. It's almost as if the reader can forgive her, but cannot blame her for her actions.
