summary: if you can have a memory of anything you want, what would you want it to be? what if you could experience things that never actually happened?
a/n: LJ IS BEING A BITCH WITH THE FORMATIING. a very very quick fic written after watching wongfu production's shell. i think watching the short film before reading this would be a good idea.

junhyung has always been the stronger one. they first met when they were 7. junhyung stepped in when the scary kid from the next class, kangin, tried to take away hyunseung's lunch money. well, he didn't step in exactly. junhyung had thrown a rock at kangin's head, grabbed hyunseung's hand, and yelled for them both to run. the little incident resulted in all three of them receiving detention, which junhyung complained was "so so so unfair."

"but it's okay," junhyung grinned at hyunseung. "i met you."    ∞

hyunseung arrives at college on the first day of the semester, armed with the Welcome to Kyunghee University! brochure and a stomachful of butterflies. scanning the campus for familiar faces, he spots a few kids from his hometown, some that he's seen around town, some that he once shared calculus classes with.

the next face that comes into his vision makes him stop. years has passed, but hyunseung cannot possibly forget that face. how can he forget the one person that featured so prominently in his childhood?

"jjun-" the name falters from his lips when junhyung's gaze settles on him for only a split second before moving elsewhere.

we've grown up, hyunseung reminds himself. we haven't seen each other in years. 6 years to be exact. things have changed in the past 6 years. our looks must have changed. junhyung no longer looks like the awkward boy with limbs everywhere. now he's gorgeous, with a cool demeneor, and an unexpected smile that knocks girls off their feet. but i'm sure, even if things have changed, our friendship hasn't.    ∞

after they graduated from middle school, junhyung moved away.

it was hyunseung's 13th birthday, and junhyung was at his house for a sleepover.   after a whole night of marvel heroes on hyunseung's brand new playstation, they settled down to sleep. it was then, with their backs facing each other, that junhyung broke the news.

hyunseung turned over and stared at junhyung's back, realizing belatedly that his feelings for junhyung couldn't be chalked up to friendship alone.

weekly calls became monthly calls became a postcard on christmas, and gradually they drifted apart.      ∞

through some snooping around and a week of sucking up to the ever popular, ever flamboyant key, hyunseung finds out that junhyung is in the drama club.

"it's where everyone who's anyone hangs out," key says. the way he looks at hyunseung implies that he doesn't think hyunseung should step within a 10-foot radius of the club, but it's okay, hyunseung has always been dense and unperceptive.

he signs up for the drama club the day itself. he marches up to the theatre room where club meetings were held and introduces himself loudly as “first year music major, jang hyunseung!” junhyung looks at him with more interest this time, and hyunseung can’t help but cling to the small flame of hope.

junhyung doesn’t show up for the next three club meetings. hyunseung spends those three meetings cowering in a corner until an impatient key tells him to speak up or get kicked out.

thankfully, junhyung shows up for the next meeting, or hyunseung would’ve quit. with dark circles under his eyes and an obviously frazzled appearance, he explains his absence by saying that he's been working on some lyrics for his upcoming test. it takes some prodding by the other club members before junhyung agrees to give them a sneak preview of his prepared performance. “just give me a minute to prepare,” junhyung says as hides in the back to run over his lyrics.

hyunseung notices that junhyung keeps touching his nose, which he always did when he was nervous, a habit that hyunseung remembers clearly from their childhood. seizing the chance, hyunseung walks up to junhyung. “jjun, you haven’t changed that habit, huh?” hyunseung touches his nose and smiles pleasantly.

junhyung frowns and quite frankly, hyunseung thinks he looks a bit freaked out, but that can’t possibly be-  “excuse me, do i know you?”

hyunseung's heart shatters in pieces.∞

( hyunseung fingers the namecard in his pocket and looks up at the white, pristine building. it looks like a clinic, or a lawfirm, but it promises something much more.

pulling out the card, he reads the fine print for the umpteenth time.

"now, hyunseung-sshi, i'm sure that you are aware of the implications of your actions?"  the doctor is a picture of professionalism with his white labcoat and black-rimmed glasses. he frowns a little at hyunseung and hyunseung fidgets in his black armchair. "we've been through this in the previous sessions, but i need you to be absolutely certain."

distracted by the many medical certificates hanging across the doctor's wall, hyunseung nods. "i won't see junhyung ever again. i just want something to cling to. i... i like him too much, but he's never even glanced my way." the lies flow easily from his lips, and the doctor accepts them just as easily.

seemingly satisfied with his answer, the doctor types something into the computer. "i remind you again, hyunseung-sshi, that the memories we implant into your brain are purely one-sided. it's not too late to pull out, but i see that you know what you're doing. now if you'll just lie over here..." )  ∞

when hyunseung was 7, a boy named junhyung barged his way into his life and stuck by his side when everyone turned away.

when hyunseung was 12, the boy named junhyung burrowed his way into hyunseung's heart and set up camp, blowing into the embers of puppy love.

when hyunseung was 18, the boy named junhyung broke his heart.
