"Hi," the unfamiliar voice said.

Tablo lifted his head up from the book he was reading to return the greeting. It was Kyuhyun and Tablo was faintly surprised. In the two years since Kyuhyun's debut, he had not spoken a single word to the magnae. They hardly even crossed paths. While Hyukjae, Eeteuk, Shindong and most of Superjunior went on shows, radios and hosted their fair share of programs, Kyuhyun preferred to stay at home, gaming or reading. Superjunior M made the chances of Tablo meeting Kyuhyun even slimmer. "Oh, hi." He prepared himself for the awkward silence that would follow. Magnaes weren't known for their talking abilities. It was rare for one to even start a conversation.

Instead, Kyuhyun said, "Hyung, did you write a book?" His voice was calm and soft with a delicate tilt to it, completely different from the other Superjuniors' loud and noisy behavior.

"Uh," Tablo wasn't quite used to speaking to someone with obvious intelligence. "It’s a collection of short stories I wrote during my university days."

"Oh, so it’s in English?" Kyuhyun asked. He licked his lips and Tablo was briefly distracted. Kyuhyun weirdly reminded Tablo of calm, cold wintery landscapes covered with snow. He was obviously more mature than his hyungs.

"Uh no, I translated it into Korean. But there's an English version too。"

"That’s cool. I wish I could write a book. Then again, I wish for a lot of things that can never happen," Kyuhyun laughed softly, almost bitterly.

Tablo slowly closed and set down his book. "You could write a book anytime you want. No one is stopping you."

"It’s not a priority, merely a wish. What I really want is to attend University in peace and graduate without the annoying girls screaming my name." Kyuhyun smiled to soften the effect of his words but the smile didn't quite reach his eyes. "I don't want to be known as the Boy in the Boyband forever."

"With your voice," Tablo begun carefully, "you could achieve amazing results." Talking to boyband members in doubt was dangerous territory. If he lost the will to follow directions mindlessly and keep portraying their squeaky clean image, the future of the band will be uncertain. Tablo didn't want to be the one responsible for making Kyuhyun quit Superjunior and risk ticking off the company and fans.

"I envy you sometimes. You have freedom to do whatever you want. I heard Mithra has a girlfriend." Kyuhyun rested his serene gaze on Tablo. "Like you." Tablo figured Kyuhyun was about half a head taller than him. He seemed bigger up-close in person. Tablo also noticed the makeup lightly disguising the eye bags and the pimples, no doubt the result of late nights and nonstop schedules. He almost felt pity for this boy. Before Tablo could reply, Kyuhyun continued, "I never went through the training like the others. I got in through a competition."

Table nodded. He knew this. Knew the chaos it caused the original Superjuniors. Watched the reruns of the shows with a terrified Hyukjae. What if the fans protest? What if he doesn't fit in? What if he doesn't like us?

"Do you know what Sooman told me?" Tablo was again surprised by the fact that Kyuhyun called his boss by his name instead of the usual forms of respect. Not even the full name. Then again, this was Kyuhyun and he didn't gain his reputation as a smartass for nothing. Maybe attitude ran in magnaes too. Look at Changmin. "He said the contest was rigged. He made sure I stayed until the final two. He also made sure I didn't win."

The startling news left Tablo speechless. "That's... Fucked up," he managed, observing Kyuhyun for his reaction.

"I was angry of course. I thought I made the finals because of my talent. I was content with second place. Then he tells me this," Kyuhyun spat the words out in disgust. His hands clenched into a fist and the veins pop out, purple and green and running all over. "He let me reach the finals to further observe my talent and to save him the training time. He said I could get used to the stage and improve and also learn to withstand stress. Being so close to fame yet so far, it drove me to try harder. In the end, I caved. He convinced me that being first place did me no good. I would have been confined by a leash because of the contract. I would have to do everything the competition producers wanted me to do." Kyuhyun laughed dryly. Again. "Did I make the right choice? The grand prize winner has disappeared without even releasing an album but I'm in Superjunior. Superjunior!"

Kyuhyun was rambling and his face was animated, almost angry. No, not angry; Kyuhyun's face could never be contorted into a hideous expression like angry. His face was tight and controlled and gently concealed all emotions but his eyes blazed likes magnificent fires. Tablo felt like he was being cornered by the words hurtling towards him like a fast and furious piano piece -Tablo briefly thought of comparing Kyuhyun's words to bullets but his voice was too calm and mellow to be compared to an instrument of death- but he didn't stop him. "You've been in an accident; you know the feeling of helplessness that engulfs you when you realize you're confined to a hospital room while everyone else is busy recording new songs and learning new dance steps. At least I knew at that moment that fans had truly accepted me, and it was they who motivated me to live through the days. The doctor said it was a miracle I could stand, much less dance. I proved him wrong, he said." There was fierce determination ringing in his every word.

"Hyung, I'm going to go solo one day," Kyuhyun declared with confidence, mostly to himself and to the air, like a promise and a vow. His smile softened and his eyes shifted over to the screen where Shindong and Hyukjae are laughing and jostling each other. "But I will forever a part of Superjunior, no matter how far I go on my own."

"Did you ever tell anyone about this?" Tablo had always known that the music industry was corrupt. This only proved it.

"No, I signed a confidentiality agreement. If I breeched it, I would be out of the industry so fast it would be as if I never entered it.," Kyuhyun replied calmly, all traces of the previous anger gone.

"Why did you tell me then?"

Kyuhyun smiled. "Because you look like someone I can trust."

Tablo didn't know whether to speak or not in fear of ruining the moment but all he knew was that he wanted to scoop the magnae in a bear hug and pat him on his head. Standing up, he swung an arm around Kyuhyun and grinned. "Let's go for a bottle of soju."
