It was Valentines Day.

Ishida didn't really give much of a fuss about the occasion as the others did. It was just like any another day to him. After class, Orihime approached him before leaving and asked if he could stay for a while. Not long after, they were to only ones left in the classroom. Everyone else had dates to go to, or dates they'd wish to go to. The stood facing each other.

"H-happy Valentines Day, Ishida-kun!" She held out to him a small white box with a neat red ribbon on top.

"Thank you, Inoue-san." He took the gift from her hands, looking at it and back to her.

"It's no big deal." She smiled at him and he smiled back. "Open it."

The box was plain and simple; it was small enough to fit on the palm of your hand and was shaped like a chalk box. Ishida was surprised that Orihime wanted him to open it already, so he removed the lid and found inside a few chocolates under a folded piece of paper. Neither of them said a word. Ishida took out the sheet, set down the box, unfolded and smoothed the paper and read:

Will you be my Valentine?

Only those five words. Nothing more.

"Inoue-san--" He said, slightly embarrassed after reading.

"I-I know you don't really like Valentines Day, but I just thought that..." She looked away and fell silent.

"It's okay." He assured her. "I would love to be your Valentine, Inoue-san." The way he smiled after he said that almost made Orihime faint. Instead her face lit up and she hugged him.

It didn't last long because she abruptly let go of him. "I-I'm sorry--I mean-I’ve got to go!"

She headed for the door, but stopped before leaving the room. Without looking at him, she said, "Thank you, Ishida-kun." and ran off. He smiled.

He knew she was smiling, too.

Later that day, Ishida was walking home from school with a book in hand as always. He was still thinking about what had happened with Orihime. Why'd she leave? It was the first time he was asked to be someone's Valentine. He didn't know what was supposed to happen. Should he have held her? Should he have ki--

"Ishida!"

He turned back to find Ichigo running towards him.

"What do you want, Kurosaki?" Ishida was shocked that Ichigo had followed him.

Ichigo reached him, breathless. "Hey, Ishida, um...” he said. "Err... You get anything for Valentines?”

"Yes, actually. Why do you ask?" He wasn't really interested. He was too preoccupied with his book.

"Nothing, really. It's just... um." He looked at the ground. "I mean, I forgot that it was Valentines today and Rukia got me this box of candy after classes and she got all mad at me because I didn’t thank her for it, and... uhm." He tried and failed to act cool.

"What do you want me to do about it?" His voice had an annoyed edge to it.

"N-nothing!" He looked awkward. "Wait--what did you say?"

"If you're just going to waste my time--"

"You... got something? From who?"

Ishida was surprised at how curious he was.

"It was from Inoue-san and--"

"Inoue? What did she give you?" Ichigo turned green with envy after he found out it was from Orihime.

"S-stop that, Kurosaki! You're scaring me."

"Oh-! I'm sorry... I'm just curious, is all."

"This isn't like you at all."

There followed a short awkward moment. "She got me this box of chocolates." Ishida said, to kill the silence.

"That's it?" Ichigo was a bit relieved to know that it was just a simple gift.

"Yeah. There was a note inside, too."

"What did it say?" Ichigo looked desperate to know. It was strange.

"It just asked if I could be her Valentine." Ishida took a while before answering. "I couldn't refuse."

"Oh." Was all he could say. "That's cool, I guess."

"So, erm, do you need anything else? Since you followed me on my way home, I assume you have something else on your mind, correct?"

Ichigo looked at Ishida intently after he said that and took a step closer to him. Their faces were only inches away from each other, and Ishida was uncomfortable with it.

As Ishida was about to say something witty about his actions, Ichigo stopped him by kissing him softly. Ishida fell off balance but Ichigo took the sides of his face in his hands to keep him still and Ishida got hold of Ichigo’s shoulders, involuntarily. Ichigo sighed and let go of him when he felt Ishida tense.

Ishida was frozen while Ichigo kept calm and backed off. He looked like the calmest guy in the world compared to Ishida.

"None." Ichigo said in a small voice. "Not anymore."

Ishida was dazed. What had just happened? How did it happen?

"Sorry for bothering you. Happy Valentines Day, Ishida." He turned around and started walking back.

"W-wait!" Ishida was confused. "Kurosaki...!"

"Yeah?" He stopped, but didn't look back. He was also a few feet away from Ishida, which made it easier to talk to him.

It took a while, but Ishida managed to get back his composure and pushed his glasses up. It was almost scary on how he could do that.

"You idiot."

Ichigo didn't respond. He was used to Ishida insulting him like that. It was as usual as a 'hello' to him.

"You know I hate Valentines Day." Ishida said. "Do you know why, Kurosaki?"

"Because no one ever wanted to be your Valentine?"

"Ha, ha." He paused. "It's because it makes people do stupid things. That one day of the year that makes people look like fools trying to get the person they love to return that love. It's sad. Almost pathetic."

"And we all know the high and mighty Quincy wouldn't allow his pride to get tainted by such foolishness, now would he?" Ichigo said sarcastically. Ishida ignored him.

"I pitied them. Why do they stoop to such a low level?" Ishida sighed. "But now, thanks to you, I... I think I understand why."

The two didn't say anything; they didn't know what to say.

"So," Ichigo said confidently then turned halfway to look at Ishida. "does that mean I'm not screwed?"

Ishida felt lighter when their eyes met. "Nope. You're still very screwed." Ishida smiled.

Ichigo then turned back, walked away and waved. "See ya later."

"Yeah... Later, Kurosaki." He was still smiling.

He knew Ichigo was smiling, too.
