Christine and Peiyan started dissecting visual and auditory structures in the cortex and subcortex of different brains so that we could investigate how the two functional pathways scaled in numbers of neurons. As primate brains increased in size, did vision take over hearing, as presumed in the highly visual primate species? (It turned out it did not, although we found that vision does take precedence: the nonhuman primate brain has around fifty times as many cortical neurons devoted to processing visual as to auditory information.)
