Similar Neuronal Trajectories During Learning and Memory Recall
...Their experiment is important for two reasons. First, it demonstrates that similar neuronal trajectories are formed during encoding and recall of an episode, suggesting that the initial condition can be set by voluntary recall. Second, during the encoding process, information ows from the external world to the neocortex and then to the entorhinal-hippocampal system. During recall, and possibly imagination, the direction reverses: activity begins in the hippocampus and propagates to the neocortex.
