PSYCHE AND SOUL

Hillman, J. (1992). Revisioning psychology. New York HarperPerennial. (Reprint of the 1975 edition.) This is a classic philosophical and historical foundation for the contemporary therapeutic emphasis on the soul. Hillman borrows from the Romantic poets Blake and Keats the notion of “soul-making,” asserting that “the purpose of life is to make psyche of it, to find connections between life and soul.” This is worked out through explorations of personifying (imagining things), pathologizing (falling apart), psychologizing (seeing through), and dehumanizing (soul making). Hillman builds on ideas first developed in Suicide and the Soul (New York, Klein. D. B. (1970).
