Seven Years Ago Today

"Concerned Neighbour" Dept.:

Seven years ago I went for the first ear-candling I'd ever experienced on a day off from work. It was a Tuesday. I had Tuesdays off back then.

They told me a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center when I laid my head down and I felt the heat soften the excess ear wax in my right ear and draw it up into the cone shaped, wax-lined, channel of paper that had been set aflame. It was strange and relaxing but strange - I wasn't thinking about planes and buildings, I was thinking about how strange that something that was left over from back when we as a species were still beating our food to death with our bare hands and eating it while it was still bleeding would be thing that was making it difficult for me to hear because of some allergy to dust or something. And how relieving it felt.

By the time I had walked home I turned on the TV and started to watch the footage as we all did.

I didn't know anyone who was working there at the time, but I know people who did. I still offer my deepest condolences to those people.

In a week's time I was already feeling angry at the Republican Prsident's handling of *my* country's involvement with helping you all. We had all of the people from your country or on the way to your country who were traveling via airplane that day and the next two "visiting" in MY country for a week until the airspace was opened up again for anyone not named Bin Laden - we looked after your citizens and housed them and fed them because that's what a good neighbour does. We were immediately told by your President that you had never had a better friend than Britain. Colin Powell who was your Secretary of State at the time immediately flew North and apologized to us for what your nose-picking Supreme Court appointee had said, but that was, for me anyway, the beginning of a very long seven years of being told that nobody but your President's friends mattered to anyone official and making decisions down there.

The rest of you found that out when New Orleans flooded.

Olbermann talked about it last night. I can't add anything to this.
