Prompt 1: What does Christmas mean to you?

Dec 22, 2006 03:27

Christmas lost it's meaning partially long ago when my Mary died. It wasn't the same without her. It lacked the smells associated with her. There wasn't the spiced smell of pumpkin pies baking. There was no smells of the turkey roasting through out the day. I no longer heard the familiar sounds from the kitchen as she moved around. The house was less alive. She had such a beautiful laugh that filled the house as she watched Dean tear into his gifts. She loved seeing his eyes light up as he saw what had been hiding under the wrapping paper.

We'd make cookies together as Sam sat in his basket and watched us. While we waited we tickled Sam and smiled as he giggled out. Mary always loved hearing his laugh. She glowed a bit more when she was with our sons. She made Christmas special, it was her Holiday.

For me without her it became just another day I wished she was still there. I just wished harder on Christmas day. For a few years after she died I'd wake up and swear I could smell her cooking only to find no one there. Just me alone with our boys and later it was just me alone.
