When I first found out there was going to be a movie about 300 Greeks making a last stand, I was excited. See, the only time I'd heard of a fighting force of 300 was that Sacred Band of Thebes, 150 pairs of boyfriends. Okay, well, this movie isn't about that.
Maybe there should be one!
But, my boyfriend wanted to see it. Let's go.
Okay, well, the Spartans call the Athenians "boy-lovers" like it's a bad thing.
Mind you, "boyhood" lasted until about 30. The "most charming" boys have their first beard, (i.e. young men) and they were consenting. It's not that different from the age requirements of many gay men today.
They call Athenians "boy-lovers" as if they were modern Americans trying to call gay men weak to keep them out of the military. Bah! This was how boys became men, the tutorship of an older man teaching him how to drive a chariot, how to fight, and how to be an honorable man.
But the historical inaccuracy runs deeper than that. In Sparta, the older man gave his boyfriend armor when he was ready to join the army. As in, when you see this movie, and 300 half-naked men in Spartan uniform, every one of them got felt up by a man to wear it!
It drives me nuts to see this blatantly censored, and homophobia (not to mention some pretty brutal lookism).
I do want to see a movie about the Sacred Band. Even if I have to write it myself.
