Their stuff just was not very good. Back in the 80s they had no competition and did put out some good products. Then, most of their designers and scluptors moved on to newer, better, companies and Verlinden continued to put out mediocre products year after year. I will say they always had some great quality molding, but engineering, fit, and accuracy were always fair to poor. In more recent years any "new" products were usually just rehashes of older pieces. You would buy a detail set for a brand new kit, and find the Verlinden kit was just a reissue of a 20 year old set designed for a totally different model.
As to the destruction of the molds, that may not be the case. There is a discussion on the General Missing Lynx page about it.
Apparently Verlinden offered the brand up for sale but no one wanted the stuff... That should give you an indication of its general quality in the 2016 market.

Buckeyes57: "He decided to retire. That is all I know. "
I don't blame him- Francois Verlinden has been in the business since the 1970s, if memory serves...
I've still got quite a bit of VERLINDEN resin figures and stock in my inventory- (No, I am not a hobby shop) I really liked his 120mm Figurines, especially those of the Napoleonic Era...
Too bad-
I wish him well in his retirement...
PS- Guys- Try Dragon-Hobby on ebay if you need VERLINDEN items- They carry(ied) a LOT of VERLINDEN stuff the last time I checked...

Bish: "Now that will be a lose. But i thought Francois Verlinden had passed on the company years ago as it used to be based in Belgium and is now in the US."
the Baron: "It is, or was. It was located in Missouri. But he still ran the company.
I read in that Facebook thread a post to clarify that the existing molds were destroyed, or more specifically, recycled, since they're rubber. But the masters exist. That suggests a possibility that some other manufacturer can make an offer to buy them and revive the catalog."
Bish: "Thanks for clearing that up.
To be honest, i am not sure why anyone would anat to take on those molds. While i do like their stuff and we certainly have a lot to thank them for, they have now been very surpassed. And much of their stuff does have issues. 35th figures that are to big, AM sets that don't fit properly and plaster buildings with poor moldings."
I happen to know Bob Letterman of VLS (Verlinden, Letterman & Stok) from the early 90's and others (Verlinden, Lewis Pruneau, etc...) associated with the company. I also attended their first Convention in 1991. Verlinden and VLS went their separate ways years ago and I believe the two are separate companies. Many consider the initial Verlinden affter-market products as the beginning of the Golden Age of Modeling. I certainly do. However, as early as the mid-90s other after-market companies soon became more specialized, innovative and more flexible than Verlinden and soon the company was out-classed in many areas. Most of their PE and resin upgrades were notoriously difficult to work with, and their resin figs soon fell by the wayside as companies like Alpine came along...although sad, my modeling efforts will not suffer as I haven't bought a Verlinden product in years. But I do recognize their groundbreaking efforts that forever changed the way we all approach and build models...

IMHO Verlinden interiors bridge the budget gap. Specifically, I refer to the Panzer III and IV interiors. They were fairly accurate, much more affordable and easier to work with. I started, with TWS and CMK and botched both of them. Verlinden filled this gap. I am already on a mission to pick up as many of these gems as I can.
