Just a simple calculation I keep thinking about...
efficiency = (useful energy produced / total energy used) * 100%
diesel engines are more efficient than petrol internal combustion engines, and at best 33%, to create mechanical energy from chemical potential energy (trust me, but Google it if you want).
the required mechanical energy is proportional to the mass being transported (high school physics)
a fat (or big) person (100kg) in a small car (900kg) constitutes only 10% of the overall mass
i.e. 90% of the mechanical energy is used in transporting the mass of the vehicle
overall energy efficiency to transport just the one person = 33% x 10% = 3.3%
awesome.
[real world figures probably yield less than 1%]
