This sucker's 100% pencil tool, ma'am. You could do something like this after a half hour of practice.

I understand how to use the pen tool now, but it's a pretty time-consuming tool, so I only use it when a really mathematical line is called for.

Yeah, it's all vector. The texture I layered on in Photoshop afterwards, but the linework is all math.

Yup, the pencil tool is the go-to freehand tool in Illustrator. The brush tool is also fun, but less practical.
