I love that illustration! The photo is blurry, but the lighting makes it look so rich and nice!

Yeah, if you did that in Illustrator, you're ready to give tutorials ...

HA! Where's Jenn when I need her?

At one point, I needed her help to figure out how to create black outlines for all of the characters without wasting time doing it by hand, so I took the image file over to her place.

She awed and was mortified when she saw how the piece was actually constructed, like a mom discovering that her retarded 6-year-old stepson has just made a perfect scale model of Notre Dame using his own feces.

Wait, what? Did I read that right? You can just drop pencil files into Illustrator and it'll outline it for you? I've only used Flash and I've just started going through a huge Illustrator tutorial book and that just blows my mind.

whoa. Define "on the fly".

That's a nice illustration regardless!

"On the fly" being that I thought I'd have a month or two to create that image when I really only had two weeks, which led to a whole bunch of 14-hour workdays last month.

It was actually pretty fun - I devoured an entire season of Voyager and several entire seasons of "Good Eats" while I worked away, so I sure as hell can't complain.

You're fuckin' nuts, dude, but it looks REALLY great and completely professional - looking at the final result nobody would ever guess it was your first major Illustrator job.

Next time around we'll get you to use clipping masks and groups and compound shapes so it doesn't give your computer suicide urges.
