When they get the news about Firefly being canceled, Summer feels like she just lost a parent.

She stays late after filming that day and runs her fingers over all the spaces of Serenity, tries to memorize the way the metal feels beneath her fingertips. She wants to steal the flower pattern from the galley, wants to take one of Wash's dinosaurs. It's funny how she actually feels like these characters are real people, like they're part of her family.

There are even times when they're running lines and she doesn't feel like herself anymore, like River's actually become another part of her. It makes it easier to see Sean then, because she can just pretend that he's Simon and that she doesn't get butterflies when she sees him. She can look at him with concern, with love, with whatever emotion River is feeling and no one thinks twice about it.

Her feet move her towards the infirmary without her really ever thinking about it. She sits down on one of the counters and looks around the room, wondering how much longer she'll be able to sit somewhere on the set and just enjoy her surroundings. The infirmary, though not one of River's favourite spots, was one of Summer's. She loved every little piece of it; something about it made her feel at peace, like everything was okay for a moment in time.

Sean walks in after Summer closes her eyes, her head leaning back against the wall. He's quiet, so she doesn't realize he's there until he speaks.

"I didn't know anyone else was here."

He laughs when she startles, her eyes flying open.

"You scared me," she says, as if it weren't obvious. He grins and she looks away, ignores the butterflies in her stomach and tries to pretend she's River again. "What are you doing here?"

He shrugs. "Didn't really feel like leaving right away."

They don't talk about Firefly being done, or about how the air seems thicker than before. She doesn't acknowledge that he's the thing she'll miss most about the set and he doesn't acknowledge that he doesn't want to leave. Instead, they talk about memories they have of certain scenes, the way they screwed up lines, how much fun the entire cast is.

When they say goodnight, complete with a hug in the infirmary's door way, Summer feels her heart skipping beats. She offers Sean a smile before she squeezes past, heading towards the dressing rooms.

She doesn't look back, but she swears she can still feel his arms around her.
