Reevers were near; River had announced their presence a few minutes ago, a whispered word that sent chills up everyone's spine.

They'd lost the doctor last time there were Reevers, and it took months for Kaylee to heal. Zoe became strong, independent; the crew never saw or heard her cry. They never saw or heard from Kaylee, either; she spent her time locked in with Serenity, listening to her as she stayed curled in her hammock.

Months later, when they decided to drop in for another mission, Kaylee came out. She was a shell of her former self, but Mal could see part of her had returned.

Now, they stood around in a half-circle, staring at the door. She couldn't shake the feeling that they were just standing there, waitin' for their deaths to come knockin'.

Jayne came up beside her, guns and knives and some grenades covering his body. Out of the corner of her eye, she could almost see the fear on his face; they weren't supposed to die like this. They'd come so close to death so many times before that Kaylee and Jayne alike hated the idea of not going down without a fight.

There was no dignity in dying at the hands of Reevers, she knew that. Jayne knew that. Everyone around here, even little River, knew that.

"Reevers," River's voice echoed through the ship and Kaylee's heart sped up. "They're here, waiting."

Her hands were shaking harder than she'd ever felt them shake before, but she couldn't stop them. Tears burned her eyes and she blinked them away quickly, only to find more came. This wasn't how she was supposed to die.

Her fingers stilled as she felt a hand wrap around her own, warmth and strength practically pulsing through it into her. She glanced to her left and there was Jayne, staring at her, his eyes full of concern.

"I ain't ready to die," he said, his voice low and strong. "And I ain't ready to watch ya'll die, too."

She smiled; in the midst of Reevers clawing at the door, Kaylee smiled. The expression felt forgein to her, and her free hand reached up to touch her cheek. She realized, with Jayne's strong fingers laced through hers, his rough hand squeezing hers, that she wasn't ready either.
